The first train arrived in Dunhuang at 10:30 am March 4, 2006, terminated the history of having no train station directly to this glorious city. Now the direct train from Lanzhou(the capital of Gansu Province) to DH takes 16 hours covering 1,130 km.

| Hi rita, I just read your comments and have a question. We are looking at flying into shanghai and will be traveling to beijing. We now have the chance to go to Dunhuang and are excited but don't know the best way to get there. Are there flights from Shanghai or Beijing? or is the only way the train? Also, do you know the weather in August in Dunhuang? Thank you Best Regards, thirdpartyintl.com|Nickv |

Hello Nickv, Yes, there are flights from both Beijing and Shanghai. I don't think it's wise to take train from BJ or SH, it's too far. The weather in auguse is very hot and dry, but it's amazing that it's getting dark very late in the evening, say after 9:00 pm. The exact temperature, please click this page: http://www.travelchinaguide.com/climate/dunhuang.htm Have a good trip!

My advice is to fly to Dunhuang from either Beijing or Shanghai. The train takes too much time!

It is a bit complex to visit Dunhuang by train. And you have to change train or bus in Lanzhou or Jiayuguan!!! Airplane is the best choice!

Dunhuang may have its own train station, but the suggestion that you can get a train there is misleading. Although passenger services will start at some time, the service to Dunhuang is currently freight trains only.
