![]() | Koreans start to throw back what they borrowed from China, right? First their language, they invented another set of writing system, but not quite successful to me:-). Then they changed their capital city's name from 汉城(Hancheng in Pinyin) to 首尔(Shou'er in Pinyin, Seoul in English). Awkward, I think. What do you say?? But at least they are trying to establish something of their own. |

![]() | Well, Korea is a soverign country on its own. They should have their own language, culture - tho they probably cannot eradicate the fact that they were closely linked to China at one time. But the Koreans have been friendly to China, as far as I know. Yes, recently they insisted that Seoul should not be written as "HanCheng" !! How the Chinese wanna call Seoul in their own language is their own choice, isn't it ? Just like the West still prefer to call Beijing as Peking. Their modern Korean words are quite cute. Sometime they look like cartoons. U cannot expect the Koreans to continue using Chinese language as their language - it would be embarassing for a sovereign country. The Australians & NZ choose not to be independent from Britain. If they do, I wonder what languages they wanna use as their national/sovereign language ? Aborigines' or Maori's ? I think that's also why the USAmericans choose to speak American with some changes in their written words. Am side-tracking. But it's quite fun. No offence intended at all - just for discussion only. |

![]() | Yes, pinetree, you are right. No offence intended at all - just for discussion only. In fact, many Chinese like Korean. Like Korean people, drama, food, stars, etc. Although I personally don't like Korean Soap Opera very much, I do like Korean movies. |

![]() | Let us come back to Chinese dialects?? To me, Cantonese and Hakka language are as strange as foreign language! I can't understand them at all, espcially Hakka language. Sounds like Heavenly Book (象是听天书)LoL |

![]() | I think Australians, New Zealanders and American of English origin are different cases. When the depart their homeland in Europe, the language the spoke, the religion they believed, the culture they were born endowed, ...etc. etc were all developed to a very high level. Except huge pieces of land they set feet on, it seemed they didn't have to 'borrow' anything from the local people[aboriginals]. |

![]() | Yes, they didn't need to "borrow" anything from the natives then. Infact, they imposed on them ! They practically took away the natives' everything. But of cos, the British then already have a culture, language of their own and which were presumably more advanced than the aborigines'. But in this world, power talks. Whoever is more powerful can impose on others. |
