hi could someone recommend where to stay in shanghai,
prefeerably somewhere in the centre of things, safe for a female
british visitor, with a swimming pool that is not too expensive.
perhaps one of the big international chain hotels?...

let me know thanks!

International chain hotel with swimming pool, right in the heart of Shanghai - and CHEAP. Wow !!
I think u should budget for about us$100/day, lady.

have never been to shanghai before i am looking for somewhere
'safe' to stay!

Shanghai is safe. But if u are looking for a hotel that comes with a swimming pool, it tends to be a bit pricey. If u are just looking for a safe, clean place within centre of activities, try the Motel 68 @ YanAn West Road @ below rmb250/day (us$35). It's value for money.
TCG members should also be able to assist.
U can also try looking up "AsiaTravel.com" or in this TCG website itself.
Such info are all in TCG website, actually.
Good luck and enjoy your stay in SHanghai - it's a lovely city & now is the time - cool & buzzling.

In February I stayed at the Bao Long hotel and I think that had a swimming pool. I only paid $50 US a night there. You can check it out. Just a thought.

Yes, in Shanghai it is safe to do it on your own and probably more fun, too. Just watch the traffic - pedestrains don't always have the right of way !
Hope to run into you there !

stay in the puxi area. it's the center of activity- shopping, shopping, more shopping. hehe. hotels around the bund are generally expensive so i don't think it's even worth it. how much are u planning to spend? go to www.elong.net, you can sort by area and/or price. good luck!
