I'm going to be living and studying in China for the next academic
year (september 06-may 07). I'm currently 18 and have never been
to China before (although I have spent many months in Japan). I'm
just wondering if anyone has any advice on living in Beijing vs. in
Shanghai? The programs are identical, I just can't decide which city
would be better for me to live in. Aside from this, is there any
general advice/info I should be aware of?
Thanks for the help.

Hi Zale,

If you want to look at the historic part, Beijing has the Great wall, and the forbiden city to consider. Shanghai has some grat places to visit also. If you consider the weather, Shanghai has an easier winter than Beijing. There are other people on this site who could answer other questions if there is anything else you would want to know between the two cities before making up your mind. Maybe this will you a little.

o, Terry, I don't think so.
Winter in Shanghai indeed have a higher temperature. But it's also more wet. Beijing is quite dry and may encounter sandstorms during the spring. If you want perfect weather, maybe you should go to Kunming.
What are you concerning about, zale? Food? Sightseeing? Campus life? Entertainment? Or sth. else?

For me, I think I would prefer to live in Beijing for a few yrs rather than Shanghai. This is despite the lousier climate in BJ compared to SH. I think BJ is more cultural - SH is more commerical.

I have been told that buildings in Shanghai do not have any heating. A friend of mine was going to bed at 8pm just to keep warm when temperatures outside dropped to zero.

If this is normal, a foreign visitor needs to consider this. I certainly couldn't live there.

So can a local please comment?
