One of the Four Masterpieces, The Pilgrimage to the West, or The Adventure of Monkey King, must be very famous in the world. The hero Monkey King is brave, powerful, smart and also loyal. Many movies, cartoons, novels are adapted by this fabulous masterpiece, including the famous
Da Hua Xi You.

It also fits the current that Harry Potter & The Lord of Rings are popular nowadays. The Lord of Rings are even called 'the western pilgrimage to the west' by some Chinese newspaper!

I love Chinese poetry and have a book of translations from ancient to modern writers: The Anchor Book of Chinese Poetry (ed. Tony Barnstone & Chou Ping).

Surely can't miss the fabulous Li Bai....

Alone Looking at the Mountain

All the birds have flown up and gone;
A lonely cloud floats leisurely by.
We never tire of looking at each other -
Only the mountain and I.

Wow~Lemoncactus, you are great! How about this one from Li Bai?

DRINKING ALONE WITH THE MOON

From a pot of wine among the flowers
I drank alone. There was no one with me --
Till, raising my cup, I asked the bright moon
To bring me my shadow and make us three.
Alas, the moon was unable to drink
And my shadow tagged me vacantly;
But still for a while I had these friends
To cheer me through the end of spring....
I sang. The moon encouraged me.
I danced. My shadow tumbled after.
As long as I knew, we were boon companions.
And then I was drunk, and we lost one another.
...Shall goodwill ever be secure?
I watch the long road of the River of Stars.

Li Bai was a drunkard. I think he was also of the minority group ?

Yes Pinetree, it seems many of the best writers/poets have some vice or other.

I've looked for information about Li Bai, but it seems few facts are known about him, not even where he was born! I like the legend that he died falling overboard from a boat whilst drunk... apparently he was reaching for the moon...

dear May, I love that poem, and I will post 1 more by Li Bai that I think is about freedom and peace:

You ask me why I dwell in the green mountain;
I smile and make no reply for my heart is free of care.
As the peach-blossom flows down stream and is gone into the unknown,
I have a world apart that is not among men.
