We Chinese believed that eating is a blessing. To have something to eat and to be able to eat is a blessing from Heaven. It means we are well and healthy and leading a good life.

But it is not true with the younger generations. Eating is very often fast food and faster food. They hardly sit down to enjoy a good "home-cooked" meal.

It is always like "HIT & RUN" Eat fast, run back!!

Many young chinese who are working away from home hardly have a well prepared home-cooked meal in years..... aaahhhh!! where is the joy of eating?

Dreamcatcher has a point. It is healthy to eat a good meal. So many people are not eating a proper meal, they tend to eat fast food which is not have proper nutrition, or the poor people are not able to get any meals. Having a good well balanced meal and eating the meal with your loved ones is a blessing.

One of the reasons I enjoy the home-cooked meals is that I like the atmosphere of eating with families(or friends), enjoying the 'yummy' itself comes next. So I understand well the young people who live alone and live on fast food. It's hard to cook several dishes and soup and a lot of others but only give each a few bites at last.

Xi'an has more than 30,000 restaurants ranged from star-rated restaurants to street kitchens ,the fast food chain restaurants like MC ,KFC or Dicso are 100 round ,that is to say the rate of western fast food and chinese style restaurants is 1:300 , I think most of us can enjoy genuine chinese dishes though sometimes it is not rich

This phenomenon of eating meals in a rush and at fast food outlets is, of course, not exclusive to China !! Today, in many countries of the world, most notably in America, people are eating more and more fast food, and/or food that is pre-packaged in a way to conveniently prepare more quickly/easily.

My observation in China has been, that people in general (both at home and in traditional restaurants) are eating much healthier than most in the USA. The consumption of fresh vegetables is much higher, and also I see more of the less fattening fish and chicken being consumed as compared to a higher intake of beef, here in America. Many of the Chinese families I know, still prepare most meals at home, and then only succumb to the wishes of the children on the weekend, to eat (at least) one meal at McDonald’s, KFC or Pizza Hut -- LOL.

I think Dreamcatcher is quite correct though, as the direction in most cultures today is toward the increased consumption of fast food and or quickly prepared meals, vs. the more traditional and more labor intensive methods, which taste better, are much healthier, and sooth the Soul so much more !!

I think that for those of us who 'love' to cook at home and create dishes from scratch, it is easier to keep these things in better balance/perspective.

I cannot wait to return to China next month, and make many visits to my favorite traditional Chinese restaurants !!! YUM !!! :) :)

I like Hot pot! But it do cost a lot of time especially when I dine out with my friends or families. When I am not busy, I'd like to dine with my families or friends. But when I am busy, I have no other choice but only fast food.
Luckily, there are so many local snacks in Xian! Not KFC nor MC, but traditional Chinese :}}
