Many old buildings and houses in Beijing and other cities are being torn down to make way for modern high-rise skyscrapers. The Authorities feel that it may be too late now if nothing is done to stop it. I have visited the Hutongs. It gives me a kind of nostalgic feelings as I walked the streets. It is a pleasant experience to see the contrast of Chinese living past and present. A living history. I think more should be done to preserve some old buildings/houses whether they have historical value or not. Only then will the future generations be able to undetstand the culture better.

Tend to agree with you. It's sad to see these old buildings pulled down and are lost forever. It's like part of history being eradicated. I am for such demolition if it is for direct benefit of the people. But if done just for the sake of 'modernisation", I have other thoughts. In the case of BJ - being the capital city of this huge and potentially powerfully rich country, it is quite understandable though I feel a little sad, esp the hutongs are something quite peculiar and unique to this beautiful city only. I think the hutongs can still be beautiful in these modern days & in a modern city. I hope that BJ will not turn out to be just another major modern capital city of the world.

Definitely, very old buildings should be preserved, or rather well preserved. They are the wealth of all the human beings, not a particular country, government or person. It is a responsibility for us to protect these relics. Maybe we feel weak for most of the time, but at least we can do something, right?

I think they should be preserved. It makes no difference what country a person is from, the younger generation should be able to see the buidings their ancestors built. The children must be able to see their heritage and be able to show their children.

And the young should learn something from those heritage their ancestors left to them.
