Hi Everyone
In order to try to speak just a little Chinese whist we are there is it possible to give me a phonetic spelling for the following English phrases:- Good Morning
Good Afternoon
Good Evening
Hello
Goodbye
Thank You
Please
Excuse Me
We are travelling from Beijing, Shanghai,Yangtse cruise, Xian and Hong Kong so appreciate there may be some local variations.

Think foreigners will have difficulty pronouncing the "q" , "d" & "z". The locals won't be able to understand them at all !
It is difficult doing it over in writing. Better get someone to read it to you.

Try this link for examples of basic phrases in audio files to get an idea of tones/pronunciation etc.

I think a couple of days in China and you can pick up these phrases. Just ask some of the locals to help you :)

Don't know if this will help you but try to use English words that sound like the Chinese word.like Xie Xie Ni=Thank you.English Xie would sound like shear(to shear a sheeps wool) and Ni would sound like Knee so you have Shear Shear Knee..

I did not know the R sound was carried over...thinking it was

SHE-SHE-KNEE...

...but then I have bad hearing. No wonder everyone looked at me funny.
