Had to bring this topic up again as my trip will be similar.
As I found out that the train from Yichang to Shanghai takes more than a day, I thought a plane might be the better option. How shall I proceed with the booking, shall I do it in a travel agency from Beijing or just from the Airport in Yichang - or even book from abroad? what would be my best opportunity to get a discount? Thank you for your help!

Take out a map and take a look.... I believe JABAROOTOO is correct that you are going in circles. ...and then do a google search for China International Airports... one of those links will list the top airports in China...

Once in China, air fares are not bad - even purchased across the counter.
