Was watching this programme from CCTV on formal education of Chinese children.
Generally, Chinese/confucian-based societies treat formal education as important/essential - not only to enrich a person's knowledge but also as a livelihood tool.
And when critical exams near, parents get as excited as the schooling kids. I remember that when I was taking an important exam when young, my mum bought a bottle of chicken essence to "pump" me up ! We were very poor and the cost of that small bottle must have torn my parents' pockets. But it did help !!
How about you guys/gals in China ??

Only one word to describe the students and parents in China: poor!

There are so many students in China but so little universities! What can students do? Only the hard studying can lead you a way to the universities and colleges. So we can see students study hard till the midnight!

But I can't find a better solution cos there are such a large population in China!! The competition is terrible...

To me, that bottle of chicken essence could be a burden on my mind that could hardly be carried through. So, i liked my parents' way on this, they never knew when i would have a major exam or they pretended not knowing. But when you look at the smiles they wore in their faces(tho they tried so hard to hold that back:D) when they looked at the good scores you got, I would know how much they cared.

Each coin has two sides! So does the education in China. On the one hand, in China, students can laid a solid foundation because they start to learn even from kindergarten; On the other hand, sadly to say that most of the students in China lacks imagination, inspiration, confidence, independence and some other good characters.

Is that really so, May ? I have a very good opinion everything Chinese - mostly quite baseless, tho ! This is 1 of the rare occasions that I hear the locals commenting something poorly on their education system. Maybe your expectation level is too high ? Or maybe u have been mixing around with the groups of people that don't fall into your category ?!
We SG also said the same thing about our own education system. And Taiwan's Li Ao commented that we are "stupid to the point of being cute" - ben de ke ai.!!

Ha ha, Pinetree, how do u think about him? I know some of the SGs don't like him very much!

I don't mean the system is poor. Students and parents are poor. 可怜. The system is undoubtedly not perfect, but I believe it should be like this. You know, so many people, so little colleges & universities. Students have to work harder and harder.
What's more, as you said before, Chinese/confucian-based societies treat formal education as important/essential. So that is also a reason why students and parents just want to enter into university and colleges.

Yes, we usually have good foods while preparing the exam, especially the College Entrance Exam.
Besides, the gov will even try to control the traffic and noisy around the exam room. lol

Quotation from Pinetree: Do u get to have better food/nourishment when critical exams near ?

To be frank, I didn't have any better food or nourishment when my university entrance exam (the most important exam in my life)came. My parents didn't accompany me, standing in the burning sun to waiting for me. Still I got the highest score in my high school.

In fact I don't believe in those nutriment which is promoted by the ads. Hard working is the most essential facter.

1. Your govt at least try to help to improve the environment so that examinees can concentrate better. Good of them. I wish ours can be so compassionaet as well.
2. Yes, China simply has so many people. But give your govt time - things will improve.
3. I don't dislike Li Ao - he might be rough in the way he talks (typical Taiwanese style) but he talks sense. He is also well-educated & informed. Of cos, he always say that he is the best of all which is not necessarily bad - depending on what his audience is !
His remarks on us is not totally unfair, in my opinion.
4. Peacock - u are the good. I am different - I need outside booster to help. If I could copy from others, it would even be better !!

Hi Pinetree,

Really thanks for your praising words. And what's more you have a sharp sense to tell something thought-provoking from the surface level. Great indeed!
