I understand the need of education but I felt sorry for students in Shenzhen when I was there:( It seemed all they did was go to school and do homework and never really got a chance to be a child:(

Indeed your observation is quite right. This is quite common in this region & is an accepted practice. We attach very high importance to formal education and children nowadays have a different type of childhood from earlier generations.
There is always this debate as to who is to shoulder the blame for thise - the govt, parents or just the society ? But no conclusion has come out of this debate.
