Muddie, did you use English words to mark how to pronounce Chinese words? I remembered that my classmates usually used Chinese words to mark English words when we were in Junior school, for example, Thank you (三克油 San 1 Ke 4 You 2---three grams edible oil). Interesting, isn't?

Very interesting!!! Especially considering that English writing is purely phonetic and that your friends all know the English alphabet.

My purpose was to help readers who did not know how Pinyin represented sounds. I would guess that your friends were doing something similar, although their main intent seemed to have been to learn new English words by piecing together Chinese words, which formed mnemonic devices.
