The fifth typhoon of the year has hit the eastern and southern coasts of China. Typhoon Kaemi made landfall in Jinjiang city, Fujian province just before four o'clock on Tuesday afternoon.

The eye of the typhoon had a wind velocity of 33 meters per second when it made the landfall.

Before Kaemi hit, about 644 thousand people in Fujian, east China had been evacuated.

And over 44 thousand vessels had returned to harbor.

The typhoon unleashed heavy rainfall of 50 to 105 millimeters, hitting many other counties and cities across Fujian.

In neighboring Guangdong Province, all fishing boats and rafts had sought shelter in harbors.

Provincial flood control authorities have ordered that water level in all big reservoirs lowered to below warning lines.

Heavy rain is also sweeping the eastern provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang. Local governments have drafted emergency plans and are closely watching the movement of Kaemi.

West of Fujian, Jiangxi Province is bracing for the typhoon, with downpours in the southern and middle parts of the province since Tuesday afternoon. Maximum rainfall in six hours has reached 120 millimeters.

Sand bags and stones are ready in case of flooding, and a task force is standing by to launch rescue and relief operations.

Kaemi is expected to downgrade to a tropical storm and land in Anhui, a province in eastern China. Officials have issued alerts for floods and landslides.
