Study: Changes in traditional diet to blame for rapidly bulging waistlines

"Nearly one in every five of China's more than 1.3 billion people are overweight or obese and the problem is getting worse among children, especially boys, according to a study.

The study, to be published in the Aug. 19 issue of the British Medical Journal, found that 10 million children from the ages of 7 to 18 were overweight in 2000, up 28 times from 1985.

Four million children were obese in that same age group in 2000, four times more than in 1985."

Well I agree with rita's point of view.

It is because most of families in China living a much better life then before. Parents try their best to meet their kids' need, especially on food and socks. Gradually kids become fat or even obese. :)

If this overweight/obese figure is correct, imagine the future cost to China healthcare.

I noticed the difference in my recent trip. Not only were there more stocky Chinese people in evidence, but I also noticed the height of Chinese men seems to have increased on average.

I towered over people on my first trip on my recent trip I was just able to see over the throng.

I am just 6 feet tall.

Results are not surprising given the
general increase in affluence
the one child policy
fast food/junk food mania sweeping the nation
computers/games etc sedentary lifestyle
and over indulgent parents/grandparents

unwittingly wanting to give the kids a better life than they experienced and not understanding where some of this leads

Obesity and worse still Diabetes and heart disease.

Yes the future looks bad unless some changes are made soon.

you can read the full text on here, just search for 'obesity in china' under keywords at the top.

This is one massive Western problem that I hope China will learn from and not follow. But perhaps it is already too late ?

Interesting that being overweight is viewed extremely negatively in the West where it is so prevalent. Obesity in children especially!

Hahaha !! A case of mouth of words & mouth of food not in tanderm ?
It's happening everywhere - they say it is not healthy to be obese but they continue gobbling down more food, healthy or otherwise, as people become economically richer.
What else is there for them to enjoy their new-found wealth ?
