Hi,

Just travelling down to Shanghai, wanting to visit either Wuzhen or Zhouzhuang for a day trip if possible....I'd greatly appreciate any help from anyone who's a)Done it or b) lives near these places, or c) just seems to know,

Cheers!

Personally, I prefer Wu town more, it's mroe natural there. It's good that it hasn't been "rebuild" too much accoring to some tourism-developing policies.
You can take the long distance bus with about 2 hours from Shanghai to get there. One day trip is more than enough for this small but beautiful town.
Have fun!

I have been to Wuzhen once and i loved it, it's worthwhile for a visit. Wished I could stay with the locals and wander around the town for a few days, so nice.
Never got the chance to see Zhouzhuang:)

I have been to both. I think ZZ is a bit more commercialised. Last visited WZ 1.5 yrs ago - is a bit smaller and cleaner thean ZZ. But I think, I prefer ZZ though my last visit was about 4 yrs ago.
Both are day trip visits. But I believe that u can spend another 1-2 days in the surround areas to have a better look than just at these 2 small towns alone.

There are not direct train or bus between Yiwu and Wuzhen, you can take a train or a long-distance bus from Yiwu to {Jiaxing,http://www.travelchinaguide.com/cityguides/zhejiang/jiaxing/}, then tranfer bus from Jiaxing to Wuzhen.

There are direct long-distance buses between Wuzhen and {Hangzhou,http://www.travelchinaguide.com/cityguides/hangzhou.htm}. It will arrive at Hangzhou Jiubao Passenger Center. Then you can go to Hangzhou West Coach Station, take a bus to Thousand Islets Lake.
