1463 km by rail, roughly 1300 km by road.
I definitely prefer the overnight Z trains, soft sleeper.

I'm afrain I don;t have the patience that you do for all this. i cannot understand how some of these people survive when they travel.

Most of the information about flights and train schedules are at everyone's fingertips right here on this site. Just look at the tabs at the top of the page.

Buses area different matter but China's bus system is so comprehensive, far superior to many other countries. People here need to get around and for most people and many in regions buses are the only form of transport so it's got to be GOOD

Here's a website of useful maps which shows airports roads and railway lines so it's easy to see where you need to change if there are no direct trains. The information is a year or two old but I find these extremely useful as there is both Pinyin and Hanzi for major cities.

And for those of us not familiar with China it gives us a change to get oriented before travelling.
