Guest,
Its not the police you need to worry about it’s the thought of having an accident. I don’t know how the odds compare but they must be up there.
The overall standard of driving is mixed.
Get a license. It’s not that difficult to pass. OK, so I cheated…..

GUEST21624 I live in Shanghai for the past year. I have a valid Oregon driver's license. I know I need to get a Chinese driver's license. What can you tell me about getting a Chinese driver's license in Shanghai? Where to go? What to take with me? I read somewhere you do not have to take the written test if your driver's license with Oregon is current. Is this true?

Thanks so much.

I have lived in Shanghai for over a year now. Time for me to get a Chinese Driver's License.

I have been searching the internet for info on various sites.

Some questions now:

1. With a valid Oregon Driver's License, I know I need to get it translated, take at least 8 pictures with me, get a medical exam. My question is do I still have to take the test if I have a valid driver's license from the States? I read somewhere online you can get out of the test if you have a valid driver's license.

2. Where in Shanghai do I go to make my application? I live in the Songjang area, in south Shanghai.

Thanks

Steven

Steve,
I’ve had my Chinese driver’s license for a couple of months now. As I understand it you will need to take the written test but not the practical. It has been translated into chinglish which is the main problem. Some of the questions just don’t make sense. You also need a 90% pass. It’s done on a multiple choice computer. I took the answers in with me and no one seemed to notice. I had an eyesight test too with Chinese character. In the end the Doctor (wearing a dressing gown) just gave up and ticked all the boxes.
I never had my Australian license translated. I just smiled a lot and tried to look stupid, which is easy for me anyway.
I did this all in Beijing so it may be a little different in SH.
Good luck. Dodger.

Thanks Dodger for all of your information.

Where did you get the answers to the test questions? How often to do they change the test?

I understand no medical test is required anymore. Is this right?

Where in Beijing did you take the test?

Were you able to get your license the same day you took the test and visited the test site?

Thanks again Dodger.

Steven,
The answers to the questions are in the back of the book. It’s more a case of trying to memorize the answers as some of the questions make absolutely no sense at all. When you get the book and stop laughing you’ll know what I mean.
The doctor in the dressing gown and fluffy slippers sort of gave up on me. I’m just glad she didn’t pull out the rubber glove!
So I don’t know if a full medical is required. Same rules but different interpretations.
It took 3 days for them to print the license. I started driving immediately. I didn’t ask if that was OK. Why confuse the situation?
I think its call the Traffic and road Department, miles from nowhere of course. They have a special section for foreigners.
As I was reading through the answers I looked up and saw this sign that read “people caught cheating will be…”
Good luck Mate.

GUEST75119 I've been riding a Vespa style scooter I bought off a friend 3 months ago. I was told I did not need any more than the licence that came with the bike. This is not true. I've had No problems until today when I was stopped by not one but two traffic cops here in Beijing. They escorted me to the local traffic police station where I was treated as If I'd run over a child and tried to escape the scene of an accident. They tried to keep me at the station until I gave them a Chinese Licence which I did not have so they took the bike until I can produce the documnets that I don't have. This took 7 cops not one speaking any english just shouting and laughing at the fact they had a foreign female to intimidate. My advise which I wish someone had given me is make sure you have a licence to avoid being treated in such a disgusting way.

GUEST52131 having spent the last year in zhongshan and driving without a license this is one of the funniest threads i have read. i thought it might be a good idea to get a license as i plan being here long term and am still looking into the best way. so far there seems to be 2 routes, 1 pay a company to do everything for you, provide them with pictures, passport, foreign DL and about Y5000 ..... or ...... take the written test yourself and depending on where get a medical from a fluffy slipper wearing doctor.

The best way to drive in china is to simply expect the drivers around you to simple do the stupidest maneuver you can think of. 9 out of 10 times you will be right. traffic works on a first come first serve basis and always get ready to break because they really are not going to stop. if you played video games as a kid and had to dodge object then you have some practice for the bikes and pedestrians. thing i hate the most is night driving, there are only 2 settings for headlights from what i can tell, off or full beam. i personally think many people get run over because your getting blinded by the oncoming headlights.

If anyone has any solid information on getting a motorbike license that would be useful too. i have a death wish and was thinking about getting a bike .... im sick of the traffic!

thanks
