I second the "Yu yuan Garden" recommendation. I have nice memories of that park from my first visit in 1978.

About the clubs/bar:

There are some places around The Bund (Waitan), I think those are very "fashion", kind of "sophisticated" places. Also Hengshan Lu has many places, some of them are very good. But I think there are a lot of other places you can go, but depends what you like... you can check this website:

www.smartshanghai.com

About the sightseeing places:

I think YuYuan is probably my favorite, because also can walk around the old town and take a look of the street and even visit the Confucian Temple (Wen Miao). In Pudong you have The Oriental Pearl Tower may be interesting , yet kitsch is very impressing.

You need your western earned cash for Shanghai pubs and clubs. There are so many expats on expat hardship salaries (!!!) and foreign tourists as well, that prices are close to what you pay in western countries. After earning my money in China as a teacher (at well above locals' rates it is true), I prefered to opt out of these activities in Shanghai.
