| GUEST19459 | try www.inkessentials.com again... all you have to do is go to "contact" and email the artist and he'll translate things for you as long as it's not a name since he says it may look neat as a tattoo but phonetically it only sound like your name. To a Tibetan person it might sound like gibberish if you're translating a western name. |

The correct writing is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/GUEST88105 is absolutely right in pointing out the error in the tattoo featured on Page 1 of this thread, and in addition to the "ki-ku" vowel-marker being reversed, the head-letter "na", though orientated correctly to represent the Sanskrit retroflex ण (ṇ), is misshapen. As I do online research for my work related to Tibetan translation and design I regularly stumble upon such half-erroneous or completely erroneous designs. I am currently visiting Hong Kong and just now looking at a couple of erroneous Tibetan tattoos on Websites belonging to 'celebrated' and 'reputable' Hong Kong tattoo studios. These days the Web is full of so-called Tibetan tattoo translators, designers, and calligraphers, but taking a closer look I have come to realise that only a couple of those doing hand-calligraphy and a couple of those who create designs digitally are reliable. The rest barely know how to spell even regular Tibetan lexemes, leave alone how to transcribe Western names using Tibetan graphemes (which requires specialist knowledge, i.e. the rules of transliteration of Indo-European languages (e.g. Sanskrit) into Tibetan). |
