| Recently, I found a website (chinglish.de) in which many Chinglish boards can be found. The founder of the site olr – Ji Shaorong said that Chinglish is the wonderful results of an English dictionary meeting Chinese grammar. This is about passion not mockery. Following are some of Chinglish found in olr's file: 'Deformed Man Toilet' should be 'Toilet for the Disabled' or 'Disabled Only' 'After First Under On' should be 'First disembark, then embark' 'NO Occupation While Stabilizing' should be 'No usage during train stops' Have you ever found any billboards or packages written in Chinglish in China? How do you think of Chinglish? |

| But these are the extreme Chinglish, they are amusing because the languages are very different and it is so easy to make mistakes.. There is also a what I would call a real Chinglish. In general, China will develop its own version of English, no matter how many foreign English teachers it employs. Americayn, Austray'n, Kiwi, Seth Efrican, Indian (oh I am thinking it is such a beautiful English) are all quite different from my nearly BBC English (except that I have bastardised it in Aus). We can tell where people come from in Europe by the differences in their English, and even throughout Britain there are many variations. So it is no problem that most Chinese will speak their own version of English. It adds variety and interest. But pity the teachers...just what should we say is correct and what is wrong? |
