Hi there,

Chinese farmers take up over 70% of the whole nation's population! They are yet poorer than the citizens! China is now doing more to release farmers' economic burden. Tax free is a great policy! And reducing or exempting tuition fee for those poor student from rural families is also helpful!

Has anyone been to China's rural areas? What have you seen and how do you feel?

My wife is from the countryside just northwest of Beijing and I've spent a lot of time in her village. I've also visited (very briefly, though) a few other rural areas. I think the government's policies are a good step in the right direction, but of course it all depends on how these policies are enacted. And of course, the action depends on local officials.

Actually, I would encourage foreign tourists to visit the countryside, because that is where you will find by far the best hospitality. But of course, I'm biased :)

I completely agree with you Chris. I also try to spend most of my time travelling in rural China where things are improving but there is still much to be done to improve, infrastructure and living conditions.

Yes, Chris, you are right. It depends on how the policies are enacted, and especially the local officials. I always think that China is too big to govern well. Different places have different situations. So it's really hard to make decisions and benefit everyone.

My hometown is a small but lovely village. Life of my town fellows has been much improved. They told me that agricultural tax free really reduce their burden. Good policy the government takes helps them a lot. I can feel that they are enjoying their life. :)

Peacock,
Do you really think a free agricultural tax policy can ease the burden? I remember the tax is only a small amount - may be less than 50 Yuan per capita. So it doesn't help much.

In fact, many farmers are much and much richer than city residents. They don't have to pay much for food. It's easy for them to get houses - the land price is low and they can hire people to build houses for them. They don't have to pay to any agencies. And, most farmers don't live only on their farms, they also have jobs or business to earn money. In my village, many people earn much more than those in big cities even if they don't have these certificates needed in cities!

There are also some famous rich villages in China, such as Huaxi Village in Jiangsu Province, and Nanjie Village in Henan Province. I suggest those interested in Chinese culture to visit those vilages if having the chance.

Really, some rural parts of China is so amazingly beautiful, and exotic. Natural beauty is well-preserved and unspoiled. More important is that their customs are less influenced by the modern civilization, and there people may have fresh impressions on China.

Rich farmers are mostly in Southeast China. Think about the vast west and northwest China? Many are living in poor condition. 50 yuan maybe one week/month earning for them...

Is that true, May? Maybe I should visit some villages in Northwest China. Farmers I know are quite better-off. They work hard, but they earn a lot. Moreover, they are happy even though they do not have these modern facilities. They don't bother to be obsessed by 'modern problems'. They are in much better conditions than those struggling in big cities.

I have watched some sitcoms about northeastern Chinese farmers, they also seem to be very rich. Chinese farmers accounts for such a part of the whole population. Farming is really a promising area if more technology, investments and special talents are put into the countryside. But maybe also obstacled by the traditional concepts and the not so pleasing situation, few people like to stay at countryside.
