Greetings from a Newbie here-

I am supposed to travelling to Hengyang, Hunan for a stint as an ESL teacher at a University (rather smallish, say 7000 students). It seems like a good place as any to begin a China odyssey. I've yet to sign a contract and am looking at offers in Yunnan and a few other places. I suppose location is everything for me (I favor out of way places)
Pardon my English, but there are so many dam places to choose from it is confusing and exciting at the same time. Any recommendations would be appreciated,

I'm wondering about how long you will be teaching in China. If for a few years, you can try to sign the short-term contract with different universities in different cities. Generally speaking, at least one year contract, well, maybe you can also ask for working there only for one semester (a half of year in China).
If your staying in China is a short period, you can try more flexible way which is find the teaching jobs in English training schools (most of them are private) of different cities, so, you can teach while traveling, rather than being stuck to one place.

Alice,

An ideal time would be a minimum of 6 months to a year. Who knows what will happen in that time frame. One of the agencies possessing my records stated they would set up interviews etc..., south of Beijing, beginning at their office. I think you have to travel to favored schools to interview in person.
The University in Hengyang wanted a minimum of a 1 year committment; - and that is Understandable given their position. I'll look over the private schools, though I've turned one down in Harbin based on some really negative posts on "English School Watch".

Sleuth we are also doing this this year and by the sounds of it then we are also in touch with the same agency as you. We have decided to stick with them and are looking at a years contract rather than carry on looking around and just keeping fingers crossed lol

Halloa.. trying a flexible way of working in different cities while traveling has nothing to do with doing job-hopping irresponsibly with finger crossed.
In many private training schools, they have lots of short-term training programs, such as a half day kids’ classes for every afternoon which generally lasts a few months per program, English summer camp (no more than 1 month) , classes in the evening for adults which means you have a bunch of free time in daytime besides time for good teaching plan.
As for university, one semester for freshmen in one city, then another 6-month in another city, it won’t be that horrible.
Well, it’s responsible to do that, only if you let them know in advance.
Some people died at the exact same place at where they were born without knowing any other things out of their tiny self-centered world. It seems that sticks to one place and be more concentrated is not that perfect, right? Just like the people who traveled around the world maybe not the richest people in the world, but the bravest with open mind. It’s the thinking way that makes the difference.

I suppose only you, yourself, can answer your own question. No one can tell you what's the best staple diet for you.

Yunnan is as remote as remote can get, so that should be your choice. Enjoy your stay!

Thanks for the input.... all; I think touring around for 2 weeks will put some wear on my travelling shoes, and then reporting to work in a timely manner should do it. I just need to leave 2 weeks earlier.
