Jabaroo recently mentioned staying in guest houses for around 30rmb. I have heard of this elsewhere but I have not used any. How do I find a guest house? What is the name? Are they just rural? I would point out that having minimal Chinese I find my hotels by arriving at bus or railway station and looking for a 'shopfront' with a high desk and 6 clocks with different times from around the world, or occasionally without the clock but looking a likely place! So what chance I can find a guest house? So can you, Jabaroo, or others give advice. Thanks.

It's depend on area and a known person, who prefer the guest house. With out a reference from a know person, I guess, not wise to stay in a guest house (This is up to me)

Paul, gest houses are of course cheap but sometimes they are not as safe and clean as those star hotels. Do be cautious when you choose a guest house!

Try guest houses run by families are safe and fun, cheap but clean, what’s more, good chance to know the best places there to visit through a local’s ideas, and if you pay a little bit more, maybe you even can eat family-made meals together with them. I stayed in a family-owned hostel when I was traveling in a coastal city, a fisherman’s family, got up very very early according to their schedule to experience the fisherman’s lifestyle for one day, and watched sunrise with their kids, played the sand under sunshine without worrying about getting sun-tanned, and then enjoyed the barbecued seafood made by the mom in late night…well, it was a good trip for me. How can you find these hostels? Decide your next destination first, then try local websites to find place to stay. By the way, some recommendations from the travel fans worth your attention. Just like my last trip, the reason of choosing that fisherman’s hostel is also ‘coz of a traveler’s traveling journal.

Paul, I missed this one. There is a name for a small guesthouse which is three a Pinyin syllable but I can't remember exactly how it goes. I do the same as you or rely on a taxi driver to find them for me. The type of guesthouse I am talking about will generally be in a small town and they will often come looking for you. Sometimes called a hotel or guesthouse they are most likely a very small family run place and often near the bus stations too. I also use the term loosely to describe a home-stay, where the family has opened up rooms to guests and supply meals if required. Again, these may be stumbled on or have someone out looking for customers, it all depends on the locations and the number of tourists around.

Paul, If you need guest house in Kunming, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, call me. I have known guest houses but not 30 RMB. 100RMB with 3 times food. Better than hotel.

I stayed in a guesthouse in a small town ...at least that was what it called itself in English but it was indistinguishable from any other budget hotel. In Chengdu hostels there are advertisements for Gusethouses which seem to be hostels too! The onlt times I have accepted offers at stations, one was for a small family run hotel of a few rooms in an apartment block, and the other was a disgusting filtyh doss house! Actually I find getting accommodation is the woirst part of travelling without Chinese language - and I especially hate places which won't allow foreigners in the budget accommodation except the palce run by the city government!
