Recently, the admission fee of some famous tourist attractions in China begins to hike. Among them there are Mt. Lushan (in Jinangxi Province), Mt. Taishan (in Shandong Province), the Temple and Cemetery of Confucius and the Kong Family Mansion in Qufu (Shandong Province).

Also there are some that have increased their ticket prices in this year, such as Shaanxi History Museum, the Forest of Stone Steles Museum and Famen Temple Museum in Shaanxi Province.

How do you think the hike of the ticket price for the scenic spots in China? Reasonable or unjustifiable?

And does the same situation exist in other countries?

The last time I received information that the charge in Germany was about 70 RMB. (A museum in Koeln). Not very cheap.

Whether increases are justified is hard to know, but in the modern China the answer lies in the price or market mechanism. If people stop going and the profit falls, then they have increased prices too much.

By Chinese standards, entry to tourist attractions is expensive. If the money is used to maintain the facility I don't have much objection as a foreigner. But I am concerned that poorer locals cannot afford to visit historic and beauty spots. If socialist ideals are applied, the poor can be subsidised, but I won't hold my breath.

The wise is - make it cheap and get more clients. It is better to get 10 000 x 1 RMB, that to get 50 x 50 RMB.

ONE VERY NICE EXAMPLE - some taxi-drivers are waiting all day long to get 1 client for 100 RMB. In the same time 1 bus is getting at least 600 clients x 1 RMB = 600 RMB.

Yes, I also hope that the charge for the admission to a tourist site will be smaller, so that more average people can reach it. Anyway, the scenic spots are the treasures of all the nation, not a private wealth of the tourist spot. As for the basic facilities, they already have the government investment.

In China, before the increase of an attraction, a hearing is usually held for all walks of people to discuss. However, almost everytime the result will be one - increase. So many people doubt the hearing is for people to discuss if the increase is proper. The hearing become a increase meeting (Zhangjia Hui).

Yes, Heidi, that's true. If you try to find an excuse, there will always be one.

Hi SANYACHINA,
Your theory is true. But in fact there are too many tourists. The hike of price is just a way to reduce visitor numbers to release the pressure they bring to facilities.

Take Potala Palace as an example: the ticket price is already very high, but too many people are willing to pay for it. So the local tourism bureau HAVE TO limit the visitor number per day. Still, there are people waiting for visiting it.

BTW, the increase of ticket price is also a bad news for me! :(
