I have just finished the first draft of my thesis-Perception of Chinese People in Amecians's Eyes. According to the book I had analyzed, Chinese people in 1980s were serious, honest and without much individuality.
I wonder what is we Chinese like in foreigners' eyes now in 21st century?

"I have just finished the first draft of my thesis-Perception of Chinese People in Amecians's Eyes."

Wow, it seems that you are interested at some topics related to my major :) I am glad!

"According to the book I had analyzed, Chinese people in 1980s were serious, honest and without much individuality."

Well, not exactly...

"I wonder what is we Chinese like in foreigners' eyes now in 21st century?"

I can share some opinions that I heard from foreigners. I WILL NOT share the GOOD, because, you guys know them : nice food, beautiful girls, amazing culture, impressive kung-fu, bla-bla-bla :):):):):):):):):)
I will share the bad opinions, because in front of you they will not share it easy:

-"Chinese are dirty."
-"The Chinese women are w*ores."
-"Chinese are greedy." (Mostly true!)
-"Chinese are bad educated, without good manners..."

This things you can find in the books often, but you can hear them often if they don't know you are Chinese, for example.

And by the way - it is not important how the Chinese like in foreigners' eyes. Important is to develop as a human and powerful nation.

Sanya, just where do you get all this 'information' about foreigners? How come I have never met anyone else with such views? It isn't in the media, it isn't government policy (is it?).

In this forum 99.99% of posts are pro China, obviously we just don't have those views.

Typical character of Chinese people through the eyes of an American:

Chinese people, in general, are very focused on self-improvement through education and media applications.Schoolhere is much more rigorous and demanding than schools back in the states. They love to treat their hosts with banquets and entertainment.
Having taught English as a second language in 3 Provinces over the past 13 months, I find Chinese students to be very lackluster in their performance. While claiming to want to learn to speak English, their performance in the classroom is somewhat lacking in verbal application and involvement. The children just want to have fun. The teenagers seem overburdened by their parents and teachers at the public schools.
Overall, Chinese people are very friendly and interested in foreigners reasons for living in China. However, they often will confuse foreigners by saying things that are not true, just to appear to be kind. Respecting others feelings and being honest about their commitments are viewed as needing vast improvement. Too many times I have been "stood up" by Chinese people saying one thing and then doing something else entirely. The Chinese culture, in general, needs to be aware that people from America put a high value on respecting others and being honest.

Windenergy, all these characters are quite close to the description of Chinese in Mark Salzman's Iron & Silk, do you know him? An American youth who was enthusiasic about martial art and Chinese calligraphy and had taught English in China for 2 years (1982-1984)
By the way, when did you teach in China?

No problem! AT ONCE Ican give you a link, but let us use the private msg, because I don'twant to make them some ads here. They do not deserve it.

"How come I have never met anyone else with such views? It isn't in the media, it isn't government policy (is it?). "

Sometimes it is. If you like I can show you a lot of media about "dirty, amoral, etc." Chinese.

"In this forum 99.99% of posts are pro China, obviously we just don't have those views. "

Of course, this forum is full of Chinese and people who respect China.
