There are various ways to say Friend in Chinese, most commonly 朋友(Peng 2 You 3). 哥们儿(Ge 1 Men'er) is another good expression to call your good male friend.

When talking about your boy friend or girl friend, you can say 男朋友(Nan 2 Peng 2 You 3) or 女朋友(Nv 3 Peng 2 You 3). But some people may just say 朋友, which is more indirectly. Elder Chinese prefer another expression, 对象(Dui 4 Xiang 4), which has the same meaning as 男朋友 and 女朋友. But fewer and fewer people are using this expression now.

e.g.:
Sam：你好，梅。
May：你好，山姆。山姆，这是我男朋友/对象，李(Li 3)。李，这是我的朋友山姆。
Lee：你好！
Sam：你好！


If you are talking about your fiance or fiancee, you should say 未婚夫(Wei 4 Hun 1 Fu 1) or 未婚妻(Wei 4 Hun 1 Qi 1). 未 here means 'Not', and 婚 means 'Marriage' . 夫 and 妻 can be used together to indicate 'Couple'. 夫 means the husband and 妻 means the wife.
