| March 3rd in lunar calendar is the traditional Girl’s Festival of China in ancient times. Adult Ceremony for girls used to be held on this day. Yesterday, a group of fans of Han Chinese clothing presented a live-demonstration of the ancient Adult Ceremony in Tang Paradise of Xi’an. In ancient China, girls become adults after the age of 14. Three thousand years ago, this Adult Ceremony for girls was as popular as the celebration of the lunar new year and the Dragon-boat Festival. But it had gradually disappeared since Song Dynasty. |

| Yesterday’s ceremony began at 10 o’ clock in the morning, and attendees were 3 girls at the age of 14. The whole process was exactly the same as that of ancient times. At the center of the hall laid an incense burner table, upon which a figure of Yellow emperor Xuan Yuan was sacrificed. Under the music of traditional string instruments, the 3 girls entered the ceremonial hall in a group, knelt down on the cushion in front of the table. First, they washed their hands in a copper basin. Second, their hair was tied up with a hairpin. After they stood up, they were added with a piece of clothing. Then they kowtowed to their parents and drank a mouthful of alcohol. This same process was repeated 3 times and lasted for an hour. An officer of Xi’an municipal museum said that each time the hairpin and the clothing were more delicate than the previous one. And she also said that not all girls in ancient times could receive Adult Ceremony and that today’s demonstration represented an ceremony of the princess level. |
