![]() | China has the need too protect the sea lanes that are its source of wealth. It's Navy is developing to do just that. They can be used to project power too. Visiting Naval ships are always a way to show goodwill. If China can afford a carrier or two, let them build. |

![]() | If China was to move into an aircraft carries program they would need 3 carries to have any type of rotation, as one would always be in dry dock for repairs. They would also need to make a decision on what type of aircraft to fly. A VTAL type would do away with the need for catapults or ones with lesser impact on the hull. Aircraft maintenance at sea is a huge problem. Then you have the issue of operating them. A small Carrier would need a crew of around 2500 with the same number ashore in reserve. The issue of training the crew might also add some challenges. The western navies learnt over many years with trail and error and an exchange program. Who would train the crew? Russia? Good luck! ![]() | The aircraft carrier is paramount to the greatest influential tool any nation could have to promote its political will. And yes, a nuclear arsenal may offer the strongest deterent, but it is a dooms day device that if used, all is lost for the entire world. So the answer is yes, China is fast becoming a super power and hopefully a wise participant in world affairs. Having an aircraft carrier parked 20 miles off your shores is indeed a tremendious message of the nations willingness to control or elevate the situation should the threat not be mitigated. I see this as another, albeit, more forceful level of diplomacy that a nation needs to keep the world secure without resorting to all out conflict. As for comments suggesting confrontation with the US, I believe that to be highly unlikely. Both nations have too much in common and too much to lose should should that happen. I see the use mainly for third world countries who pose an immediate threat to national or world safety. And there are a few near China. |

![]() | "i belive that it is starnge that china is building mass military power and qickly my view on this is if china is planing attack on us." Guest, are you propagating "China Threat Theory"? Where are you from? USA? In a fiercely-competitive world, China as a populous country must improve its defensive capability to safeguard its citizens' lives. In 19th century, China was bullied and intimidated by the West because China lagged behind the West in military technology. |

![]() | GUEST33244, you are from USA i believe. US defense expenditures on upper border line with Canada and down border line with Mexico are close to Zero. Why is that? PRC, a mild nation, weigh a certain amount of GDP on military high-tech, why is that. one of the answer was give by METEOR, and the other one is China has a bear neighbor in north pole whose emotions are not steady, which has been discussed in china millitary forum. |

![]() | Well, apparently the discussion is over as the Chinese Government has placed an order with shipyards in Shanghai for two 60,000 ton aircraft carriers and also ordered 50 Su-33 fighter jets from Russia for them. The old Russian carrier Varig that is in China now will be used to help train crews and pilots. |
