Why do we not use force to resolve the problem of Vietnam?

1、Military strength is not enough?

Absolutely not! If we fight with Vietnam, it won't be called as a campaign, just like a battle.
We can see the result from 1988, Vietnam is very fragile.
According to the "Global Security" magazine introduced:
Vietnamese navy owns a number of 40,000 soldiers (including 27,000 marines).
Navy equipments include two submarines, five frigates, five small frigates, more than 40 patrol/missiles boats, five

minesweepers, eight minesweepers boats, six landing crafts and more than 30 small landing boats.

Look at its strength. It's very easy for us to exterminate them.

2、We dare not?

Someone said that now the U.S, Japan or even India become the background of Vietnam, so we estimated the strength, then give up?
LOL~
China doesn't want to have war with Vietnam, coz we would like to give him a chance. The last chance for him to wake up. If he continues to be unrepentant, i'm sorry. Goodbye, Vietnam!

Yes, Johnny China is much stronger than Vietnam. Vietnam is like a Chinese province. But what is the result from 1988?

War is no answer. Suggestions that China should use force are what frightens many other nations. So then they increase their military because of big bad China (in this case) and we have military escalation.

Lets learn from the Taiwan situation. No longer are there any gunboat exercises, instead we see win-win economic co-operation.

GUESTSONG2 Hi guys, this topic seems closed months ago. But recently Chinese again announce its rights on these islands AND Vietnam as always strongly protest those annoucements. There're even demonstrastion of Vietnamese students again China claim.

The point of Vietnam is, Vietnam says China has only passed by the islands before 19 century with its Hainan troop. It never settled it foot on the Nansha ans Xisha islands. Mean while, Vietnamese King has claim possession of the islands at least by early 19 century.

Below is a quote from Mémoire sur la Cochinchine (Memois of the Cochinchine (South of Vietnam) by
Jean Baptiste Chaigneau (1769-1825):

which roughly means: "Geography: the King of Cochinechine has acclaimed teritory of the Cochinechine, Tonkin (North of Vietnam),.. and some islands along the coast and the Paracel islands, consists of manu iles and unhabited rocks. In 1816, the King has taken possession of these islands."

"China actual of interest in these islands only came under communist regime in second half of 20th century, when it see the natural reserves, the strategic geography of the islands AND the alliance with former Vietnamese goverment. It is this former alliance of Vietnamese (where it got help from China) prevents current Vietnamese diplomats from strong announce Vietnam rights on these islands."

Above are some of the arguments from Vietnam side and is open to your discussion.
