hobbies, interests or social activities
Please check explanation in Oxford Dictionary from UK, not the same meaning. These three words not interchangeable.

add 'pastimes & recreations' and you get nearly a full set of not quite interchangeable words! I would arrage:

Hobbies Interests Pastimes Recreations Social Activities

<======== Seriousness ============= Fun ========>

All things we do, that may or may not involve others, and involve varying degrees of seriousness / fun.

I like:
Wood-working (hobby)
Scuba diving (hobby/sport/recreation)
Reading (pastime/interest)
Internet (pastime)
Travelling (interest)
Cycling (recreation)
Drinking in pubs (recreation/social activity?)

Lionpower, I did not say that hobbies is an incorrect word, I said its usage has changed. No young person in the English speaking countries I know would use the word. I stand by my original comment.

hey LOJADE
if you wanna use chinese charactor in your dialogue, you have to install some kind of "chinese input fuction"..... or copy it from somewhere else and paste it here....

I'm sure you have to modify your computer first and choose Chinese input.

Thank you for pointing out the difference between just reading a book (like a novel) and a reading a book with your heart in it. So, the use of 读书 perhaps would apply to a student who has his/her heart in learning a particular subject or course of study? Would a student 读书 ? 谢谢
