I'm considering moving to Suzhou, but concerned about safety in this city.

Does the police speak english or other languages?

Does the fire department have ladders that can reach upper floors of buildings?

If employed in the economic and technology development zone, where is a good and safe place to live? where do most expats live?

What's the crime situation like? Kidnappings? Robberies? Car theft?

How are the winters in suzhou? Super cold? Do winter storms cause problems?
What about typhoons in the summer?

how safe is Suzhou compared to other cities in China/Europe/East asia?

Thanks for your help!! much appreciated!!

Generally speaking, the police speak Chinese.

No.2
Of course, the fire department have ladders.

No.4
I think the security condition in Suzhou is better. Kidnappings, robberies and car theft seldom happen.

No.5

The winter in Suzhou is not as cold as you imagine. In summer, typhoons may arrive in Suzhou and bring much rains.

Generally speaking, it is a city worth visiting. It has many tourist attractions, such as Classic Gardens, Zhouzhuang and Tongli water townships.

Don't worry!!

You have to reckon that life in China is not as safe as you are used to. I don't mean in terms of crime, that is better thn most of us are used to.

There are serious safety issues in many buildings. Students in many dormitories have ALL the doors locked at night, in the event of fire the custodian inside is supposed to unlock them...yeah, if she/he is not already asphyxiated, or can get to all the doors. In any case many emergency exits are locked or have furniture in front of them.

Electical wiring standards are low and unenforced, with bare wires, loose sticky taped connections and water all together.

Safety on the raod is terrible, it is near anarchy. And I don't just mean roads, also on the pavements/sidewalks as cars and motor cycles use them too. NEVER believe it is safe to cross at a green man at traffic lights, pedestrian crossings are pretty, red traffic lights mean most cars will stop but some won't and even less motor cycles will stop, likewise with one way streets. Also I would not assume that the fire service ladders will reach as high as needed, but do they in any modern city???

It is not as easy to find English speakers as you are often told. Youngsters are taught English at school but few can speak it, but I remember I couldn't speak French after learning it for 5 years! Don't worry about that, u learn to get round that. Where you are going should have a high number of English speakers and expats. You needent worry about car theft as it is unlikely you will have one...unless you earn enough to hire a driver.

Dspite these negative comments, and I only make them becuase you are concerned, I am still here seeking another one year contract!

Welcome to Suzhou!

Does the police speak English or other languages?
No. Few policemen can speak English well. The most of them speak Suzhou dialect or mandarin.
More and more employee of MNC can speak English. A lot of MNC develop their business in Suzhou. There are more than 100 of "Fortune 500" settle in SND/SIP.

Does the fire department have ladders that can reach upper floors of buildings?
In Suzhou, the highest scaling ladders can reach 56m height.

If employed in the economic and technology development zone, where is a good and safe place to live? where do most expats live?
The most of foreigners live in SIP or SND.

What's the crime situation like? Kidnappings? Robberies? Car theft?
Don't worry.

How are the winters in suzhou? Super cold? Do winter storms cause problems?
What about typhoons in the summer?
Just as JIMMYB told you.

how safe is Suzhou compared to other cities in China/Europe/East asia?
I think Suzhou is a very secure city for foreigners. Otherwise, so many MNC will not settle in Suzhou and so many foreigners will not live in Suzhou.

I've been reading about pollution and algae problems in China. does this affect life in Suzhou? Is the air quality ok, or do you recommend taking special precautions???
Regarding algae problems, Suzhou government has taken measures to avoid the problem. Don't worry about it.

Are there any areas around Suzhou/industrial park that one should avoid???
Maybe the villa that locals around Tai lake or Jinji lake is a good option for you.

I'm wondering why you are even considering coming to China if you have soooooooo many questions about safely.
Come and find out why the rest of us are enjoying living and travelling here !!!.

Yes there are hazards but you could luck out on your way over here too...........

You might be better to tell us where you are coming from and then we could advise if China is better or worse. It sure is worse than where I grew up and lived most of my life but I'm here to experience the country, warts and all. As I'm sure everyone else is.

What about the rest of you????????

GUEST22418 Hi
I am going to join a job in an university of Suzhou. My 12 year old daughter will accompany me but she knows English and French only. Would there be any problem to admit her in a school?

I presume you'll be there for at least a school year? You should be able to enrol her in an international school -- if not in Suzhou, then in Shanghai.

GUEST12166 5 years in China, teaching in 5 cities around China, doing summer motorcycle tours over 30,000km through every province over 5 summers. I have been through more cities, inside and out, than most foreigners who have been in China, because most of them stay in one place, and have limited view. I honestly know the whole picture. Like the 5 blind men asked to describe the elephant, I can see the whole elephant.

I have traveled to over 20 countries in asia, SE asia, North America, and Europe, and China is the safest country I've ever been to, bar none. You have ZERO worry about kidnapping. ZERO worry about your physical safety. As a foreigner, and especially one there for a real, higher level job (i.e. not someone teaching at a countryside school who is running from legal problems in their home country), the police and government and EVERYONE will give you red carpet treatment in every way.

You will be above the law as long as you don't destroy property or people.

It's like that. REALLY. As an American who has been to the 4 corners of China and back again, TRUST ME. The only downsides are limited access to foreign goods and air pollution. Select your drinking water company carefully. Other than that, enjoy.

GUEST22116 Hi
I move to Suzhou next week. I was there one more ago also. What I can tell (im from west europe) that safety is on the higher lvl than in europe for sure. Air pollution is for me personally the worst case, I will appreciate if somebody can help me to find out any online monitoring system to see everyday how polluted is an air in Souzhou. Thanks
Bob
