If there had been no differences between East and West, I wouldn' t have worn Jeans; My family wouldn't have dined out at KFC.

" If there had been no differences between East and West, more people will lose their job! "

Why did you say that? Is it the differences that create job opportunities? Does it make sense?

" It is differences that create interests to understand other cultures." I think so. It is the differences that make me dream of going abroad. Only by having a close contact with the native, can we better understand their cultures. I am quite envious of those foreign nationals who live in China.

Yvonne,
there may be a difference in cultures but is there such a difference in values?
As we all talk together and listern and learn we may all discover that the values that we hold dear to our hearts are no different to any others.
Perhaps that is the bond that we all share? family, children, lovers and friend.

DODGER,
"There may be a difference in cultures" but we also share common values. As you said, we all cherish family, children, lovers and friends.

Yvonne,
It is understandable that you are so eagerly dreaming of going abroad. I have ever had the same problem. Going abroad was once my dream. Perhaps, it is a common dream for the Post-1980s born Chinese. Our purpose might be to immerse in an exotic culture to experience a strange lifestyle. Having heard of " American Dream", I call this mentality " Chinese Dream".

Leonardo, your thread is very sensitive and thought provoking.

And so are many of the responses.

But as you can see, there are not only East-West differences, but differences in individual personality and perspective, which creates the diversity of the response. I, too, do not view the cultural differences through the lens of negativity. I fell in love with China because of the differences which when experienced, have added to the richness of my life. Moreover, as the father of three in the USA and one in China, I think children add richness to one’s life also ?? But each to his/her own choices/opinions in this regard.

If the world are the same, then we'll never have to travel. Travel is a journey to seek difference.
