Quote Why did you say that? Is it the differences that create job opportunities? Does it make sense? Katrina, just because of the language difference, many people learn to be interpreter, translator, foreigner guide, foreign language teacher and many others... If there is no difference, what will they do?

West, I think you are probably a communicative westerner, who well understands Chinese Culture and the differences between East and West. Are you getting along well with Chinese nationals? I believe you are, since you have won over several lovely Chinese girls' hearts. May I take the liberty to say that it is the cultural differences that will lead you to a happy marriage. To quote Leonardo, "If there had been no differences between East and West, you wouldn't have a chance to fall in love with a Chinese girl and marry her."

I would rather there are more similarities than differences between East and West so that we can talk in the same language. No need to spent a lot of time in learn the tiresome English and Chinese Grammars. Hey, tell you a secret, my English Grammar was amazingly poor when I was in Junior High school. Keep secret ! Don't tell others,ha.

Thank you Leopold, I don't know if I fully understand Chinese culture I just respect it and hope to learn more, I think I win the ladies hearts because I treat them right, they feel safe and I'm despite being quite a large man I'm gentle with it. Mirandazhao, I don't need to reveal your secret, you already have, ha ha, seriously though your English is very good, keep it up.

I feel there are two levels of answer... I am behind Griz's view that we are essentially similar. It is all too easy to exaggerate the differences. Underneath the differences we have families, responsibilities and hopes. We have marriages, and education and so on. Yes, there are differences on the surface and they make travel interesting, they enable us to have new expereinces. We need to enjoy these now as we are steadily moving to a world where the differences are removed.

I agree with what Paul said basically we are the same, just human beings with problems of any human being living in a society. Some values are different and some practises may seem very odd to foreigners, this is all what can push a curious person toward the unknown represented by the other. Many cultures are now being standardized by the capitalist world (China is part of it now, it is even the standard bearer of it). So we have to preserve the differences between cultures, for Culture not to be a simple good or a useless thing (many historical places in China where sacrificed to profit but it is not the only country in the world). If there was no difference then there would be no interest in traveling around the world, life would be boring you would live in a world of mirror images. Life is more than just a way through: there are many things we shall see to satsify our thirst for culture, let's preserve it.

Pault, Erencius, You all are right. We shouldn't exaggerate the differences between East and West. On the contrary, we should cherish the differences. It is the differences that the dull and silent globe diversified, colorful and dynamic. As I have mentioned previously, if there had been no differences between East and West, we would have lost a rich and colorful existence. Just like you two said, "basically we are the same". We belong to human beings. Quotes from my privious post:" We share a lot in common. All our tears express sadness, and our smiling faces beam happiness."

Quote from Chynagirl: "Sometimes I wonder why God didn't make us all the same so we could live more peacefully together. I guess the differences between East and West gives us a great learning experience and opportunities for interacting with people with different ideas. I won't say that I always agree with foreigners, because some have had a very different upbringing, but I still find it interesting to hear their thoughts and feelings" Sometimes, I also hope there had been no differences between the East and the West, so that there would have been no cultural conflicts, no tribal or racial frictions. Well, after a second thought, if we all are the same. How dull and monotonous this world would have been? A fundamental question is how we can coexist with people who hold different values with us. In the history of feudal Europe, there had been "Religious Intolerance" . The people who held different religious beliefs and values persecuted each other. The Crusader was a war triggered by religious dessents and cultural differences.

It is impossible to eliminate the difference between East and West. So, the cultural conflicts are inevitable when a westerner confront a easterner. The difference in ideaology will make the the situation worse. "If there had been no differences between East and West" would never come true.
