"China Threat'' put forward by some US politicians has become a political cliche in US presidential election. In every election year, the issues concerned with China are listed on the agenda. Presidential candidates boast "China Threat" to win the support of US congress and some soldiers. As we all know, China is experiencing a robust development with an annually average 10% GDP growth. In Sino-US trade, China has a considerable trade surplus. So, some oversensitive US politicians and scholars claimed that China is a rising power who might threat US status as the world leader. In Sino-US relationship, some troublemakers frequently set barriers. I think both average people of two countries hope US and China could live in harmony and jointly dedicate to the peace and development of the world. In 1972, both leaders of two countries with great vision normalized the Sino-US relation. President Nixon paid a visit to China and put an end to the mutual estrangement of the two people. China and US should take a long-term perspective to handle the bilateral ties and meanwhile reflect on the past and look to the future. This is not only good for the two peoples but people all over the world. Why not abandon the hostile "China Threat' Mentality?

| Leonardo, I think the key to what you have writen is " I think both average people of two countries hope..etc" is what will happern. As more and more average people like us talk and get to know each other and also understand that we have much more in common than there are differences between us there will be no conflict. Unlike the start of WW1 which started amost as an accident in a backwater town that no one had ever heard of, comunication in this age via forums such as this one and more cross border visits than ever before, will see us all living together as one world people. | China is a threat to the United States; a very real competitive threat. In a few years, China's economic development will over-power the world. When that happens, Americans will have no one to blame but themselves for being "fat, dumb and happy" rather than being involved in the competition. Competition can be a wonderful thing, but when China begins to eclipse America's global status there will be sour grapes from my countrymen. ...you can take that forecast to the bank! |

Competition is always fierce and cruel. Maybe China will become the most powerful in the world someday. Then America's global status surely will be changed. If that comes true, do not be surprised. Once US and Soviet Union were two most powerful nations in the world. Finally, Soviet lost the competition with US. There is no nation that can be always No.1 in the world forever. On the other hand, China has been rising quickly in recent years. It is not strange that many other nations in the world regard China as a big threat. What China should do is to tell the world that she is not a threat and will rise peacefully using its actions.

" China treat " theory reflects that the American politician are lack of confidence of the future of their own nation. Golf war, Iraq war and 911 all proved their concern, they want to kill all the candidates and survive without competitives. China will not seek hegemony like Americans around the world to set sanctions or evoke bloodsheds among different factions, we want a harmony relationship with other countries, no harrassment, no threatens, no war, so what do you afraid of , Americans ? China, a silent and moderate giant will never behave like those Americans. Anti-terrorism is the major concern for the White House, the point is there are more terrorist activities happened in America, what would they say ? Alice

As President Hu has stated on several occasions, China is seeking a peaceful development. The US politicians are so anxious perhaps be3cause they still adopt the old mindset that the relation between the two countries is either confrontation or alliance. Since China has always abided by a peaceful foreign policy of independence and is unwilling to be in alliance with US, so US views China as its rivalry. In addition, after the collapse of the former Soviet Union, China has become the only country who has the power to confront with US. Why? In the post-Cold War, the international situation experienced a dramatic change: Russia declines, China rises,US still maintians its status of world leader. In Western Europe, UK, France and Germany are allies of America. By the way, the three countries don't have the power to challlenge US global status. In Pacific Asia, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan all follow US steps. Japan is an economical power, but militarily, it is still a dwarf. So, US no need to worry. US, perhaps, have learned a lesson from the two World Wars and reached the conclusion that traditionally, when a new power rises, it will surely disturb the balance of power and poses a threat to the old power. Germany's rise interruptd the balance of power, and led to the bloody two world wars. Personally, I believe US' ways of thinking is a littlte bit outdated. This wolrd is quite different now. All the countries have to learn to coexist with others. Global problems emerged in a large amount. No single country can handle these global problems very effectively on his own. Anti-terrorism, anti-SARS, anti-Birds Flu, and combating against international human trafficking and drug dealing, even containing the Green house emission., all these global problems need the support and coordination of other countries. Furthermore, US may have overlooked the immense power of nuclear weapons. The deterrence of nuclear weapons make any nuclear power have to think carefully before launching a massive attack against others. So, a large-scale war between US and China is almost impossible, but the countinous trivial frictions will be inevitable and long-lasting, since two countries have different national interests. As two great powers, US and China plays a significant role in international community. Therefore, Sino-US relation will have a big impact on the development and change of international situation in the next half century. How to handle biliateral ties needs political wisdom.

Is China's rise posing a threat to any other nations? Probably not , US fears that its global status will be challenged. US has been used to being a big brother for other countries. Now, he is anxious.

"As two great powers, US and China play a significant role in international community. Therefore, Sino-US relation will have a big impact on the development and change of international situation in the next half century." Right, in the past, China and US have both cooperations and confrontation. The biliteral ties have experienced a torturous development, but at large, the relationship are forwarding.

Recently, some US scholars of international studies claimed US and China have a coexisting relationship. Without China, US would have lost a great deal. Similarly, without US, China's robust development would have been discounted. Both two parties are one of the largest trading partners to each other.

I heard that Australia and Japan signed a security agreement this year because they see China as a possible threat in the future.

I think Katrina has hit the nail on the head here. Both China and the USA have too much to loose as far as trade is concerned. Trade is the key for every one to co-exist together. Dodger.
