![]() | Erencius, you history lesson should have started with the fall of Constantinople surly. It was a Christian city and the home of the second Pope after the Church of Rome split.. This lead to the agresive expainsion of the Muslims to half way across Europe. They also invaded Spain. I was refering to the recent intervention of the US in the Kosvo region when most of Europe just stood and watched, not too the last World war. The US may not have perfect solutions to the problems of the World but they have established the most succesfull nation todate that the World has ever seen. It apears that many are too quick to damn them for what ever they do. They did win the Cold War,thank God. Our lives would be very different today if they had not. Dodger |

![]() | How to say, you are confusing many things. I chose to begin by the begining. Indeed, they invaded half of Europe in the end and were fianlly pushed back to the actual borders, more or less. Though, I suggest you read some books about the Spanish Omeyyades dynasty. You'll learn that is was the golden age for sciences, philosophy and inventions. That jews, christians and muslim were living together in peace and more, in cooperation. For instance, scrolls from ancient Greek were taken there to be translated. Why ? Because at this time European people were barbarians compared with Arabic people, we were fighting all the time for small territories, the life expectancy dived. Everyone had already forgotten the ancient greek language. So they asked Jewish people to translate these book and from it they discovered many things they improved a lot of the inventions. Many very famous scientist lived there at that time: Averroes, Maïmonides... It was nearly the only period throughout which Jewish people were not persecuted, also one of the rare ones Christian and Muslim could live together without fighting. Why ? Because of tolerance. At this time, this dynasty was only persecuting pagan people. They never ask the Christian nor the Jewish to disown their faith for example, they also left the Churches and Synagogas intact. The contray happened systematically during the Reconquista (killing, destruction, tolerance 0). For what is about the Kosovo war, the answer is simple: untill 1999 the UçK (Liberation army of the Kosovo's Albanians) was considered by the International Community (UN included) as a terrorist organisation: noone considered helping Albanians there before. It changed thanks to Bill Clinton interest for the issue (You can be proud of this one, he is a very clever and pacific person). For what is about the Cold War, the US won because the USSR collapsed. But if you analyse what were the costs of it, I can tell many persons would have prefer the contrary maybe. To protect itself from the expansion of communist ideas, the US financed many extremist dissidents in Souh American countries to eliminate the threat physically, supporting new dictatorship in their bloodshed to exterminate any opposition. Hundred thousands of people died because of this and the guerilla that still exists now in South America is one of the relics of this past (not the best way to solve the problem). Though I ll never say what the USSR did was nice, it was rather the opposite. Bloodshed also. The bigger a State is, the freer it feels to commit any excess. It is still true now: China attacking every single computer system in the wolrd to test their defenses, or the US with real weapons (for other nation of course). We usually say, with great power come even greater responsabilities. I wish this will become true. |

![]() | Their is one thing I'm quite sure about though: God is for nothing in all this, it was just a war for influence which allowed the 2 protagonist to earase any opponent for money and power... This implies no moral criteria... |

![]() | Erencius, I am in agreement with the first half of your post untill you reach the Cold war section. If there is a God,?? then I thank him for delivering me from this type of goverment who killed over 30 million of their own people. Not even the USA has done this?. I cannot imagin many who would have prefered to live under this system. Yes, the USA has made many mistakes in it's short life as a nation and are far from perfect. They may still be trying to come to some understanding about "with power comes more responsibility" You are from a country that have given the World so much so I very much appreciate your comment on this forum. ![]() | Thanks DODGER, I do appreciate yours also. To clarify what I said, I told in this post that some people would perfer the contrary, I was talking about the members of the families who disappeared in South America or in Central America, nothing else. I never wished the USSR won. Anyway learning from History is really important not to do the same mistakes that happened in the past. |

![]() | "Anyway learning from History is really important not to do the same mistakes that happened in the past." Erencius, very good thoughts. In the past, we human beings has committed too many mitakes. Especiallly in the 20th century. The outbreak of two world wars pul the global villagers into the unprecedented disaster, tens of millions of civillians were killed, countless became homeless. Reflecting on the past is to welcome to the future. Learn a lesson from history. |
