Well, if nothing else, the information here is very useful. You must read all the entries to get an idea of everyones experiences and pay attention to the things that are repeatedly mentioned as requirements. And you must show them that you are serious. You must be persistent. Do not just go away if they tell you to go away. That makes it easy for them. Keep shoeing up and asking 'specific' questions. The more specific you are and the more persistent you are, the better. Not obnoxious, just persistent. You will eventually be given a different person to talk to. Then, repeat the process with this officer. There is no guarantee of any of this for anyone. How committed are you? Do not give up. They will not imprison you for just be an annoyance and going to their offices every day. They do make arbitrary decisions and are not always familiar with all the latest Regulations. Do not tell them, but ask them to check on Decree #74. Maybe you can get a copy of it from somewhere. I have not been in China long enough or married long enough to start this process, but my experience has been that they do not volunteer any information or attempt to help. You must ask the specific question to make any progress at all. And BE PERSISTENT.

It's FIVE years, people. If you haven't been married at least 5 years and have not been living continually for 5 years in China after marriage, then you are wasting your time.

GUEST22137: Yes, he was successful...and there were a few expats who gained PR before (let's not use the specifically American term 'Green Card', which is not applicable to China). Check out the conditions and you will see you must have made major contributions to society and have paid tax and been a participant in the social security system...most of us foreigners pay tax but not social security... AND you must be judged a suitable person. It's that last point that will keep out most applicants. In the Shanghai article the link pointed to, the guy was a CEO of an IT consulting company. It didn't say how many dinners he had bought to gain enough Brownie points...oops, I mean guanxi points :) Bottom line: for 99% of long term expats...NO CHANGE.
