GUEST42174 Okay so I read all 43 pages about the visas, but now people with us passport are visa exempt and don't need one. My question is if I have a passport and I get on a plane and fly to Taiwan will the see my criminal record? Should I apply for a visa first even though I'm exempt from even having one?

Seriously, we all don't know whether the immigration officers check your criminal record or not. Even you contact them, I guess that they won't give you an answer. If you are exempted from visa, then you needn't apply one in advance.

where are you hearing that a US passport makes you exempt from Visa? I dont see it anywhere on the China Embassy website exemptions.

Also, have not read this entire thing but sounds like some people are getting by with saying no and them not checking but mighta just been lucky? Reading into permanent residence card and saw this somewhere as well - perhaps would have to be a federal conviction and they dont "recognize" state convictions, or perhaps only felony matters - IDK but i just emailed my owner and was like, btw I have a DUI we should prob find out if that will deny my visa before I finalize the move.

5. Proof of no criminal record abroad recognized by Chinese embassies or consulate offices;

OK I've been living and working in China since 2003- though I did spend like 6 months back in LA in 2012 that was the only time I've really left. I switched my work permit to a 2 year family residence permit because I wanted to take a year off work to look for a better job and prepare my daughter to go into public school.

Well I found a job with an international school in Chongqing but recent changes now require a criminal check in order to get it processed through the PSB here (I don't know if it's for the letter of invitation or what because this is a first in 11 years) in order to get the stuff I need to go back to the US to get a new Z visa.

Anyway I have a dui from 2002 on my record and I was wondering if anyone else had problems stemming from DUIs. Also since they say that they require a criminal background check NOW instead of when I apply at the embassy in Los Angeles- I have no idea how to handle that from China. Any ideas or suggestions? No one at the school seems to know where I need to go to get this and they said it must be from my home of residence but I hold a residence permit in China.

I've married Chinese and my daughter goes to school here- there have been some problems with her visa as well since they decided to give ALL children born in China citizenship retroactively (thus making her have dual citizenship which is a no-no).

GUEST01245 32 years ago i was convicted of burglary, in the uk, i received a 12 month suspended sentence, i wasn't sent to jail,i did my community service,and paid a fine. Ive been living and working in china for 4 years, and now i need to renew my visa again and produce a criminal record check. For the last 32 years, i have lived a honest life,and have never been in trouble with the law since. Will that conviction show up on any background check?......i am living in China now, so without going home to get this certifcate, is there any way to get it, while still in china ?

You'd better contact the police station that has jurisdiction over your residence in UK. They can guide you how to apply for the non-criminal certificate. Also you can ask if it is possible to delete your record too.

GUEST96165 You do still need a visa to enter China from US.

For what it is worth, I have 2 DUI's from 2006 & 2007 (plus a small misdemeanor for driving uninsured) that I did disclose when applying for my L visa and received it a week later. I used a service to turn in my application, maybe that has something to do with it but there are several people within my office that travel to China frequently with DUI's on their records that have never had issues either.

GUESTJOSEPH Just for whomever travels to China with the similar situation as mine... I have a DUI and A failure to Appear on 2nd degree from 2 years ago, I went and hire a service to handle my China Visa application and on the part that says if I had a criminal record I checked "NO" today I just received my Passport and Visa via mail.

GUESTJRATT313 Hey just checking, but has anyone heard whether or not Shanghai has started requiring record checks for work visa? I read somewhere that they might have new legislation requiring it sometime this year (2015). I just wanted to double check before I tried for a job there.
