![]() | According to Xinhua news, the authoritative statistics shows that 400 commited suicide in 5 months (from April to Sep 10th) in Dongguan City, South China's Guangdong Province. Among the suicide cases, about 70% are migrating workers who came to Dongguan to seek a better life. Obviously, the great pressure is main factor to drive these migrating workers towards suicide. Dongguan like Shenzhen is a city with a large population of migrating workers. For these poor migrating farmers, Guangdong is a land of opportunity. However, the low income frustrated the migrating workers. Disillusioned with the " Cantonese Dream", many migrating workers walked on a wrong road. Other factors leading to the mounting suicide include the trouble in personal feeling and love, as well as the gloomy mentality. When they feel frustrated with life and love, they couldn't find some one to confess their trouble and pangs of life. Meanwhile, Dongguan is a city of fierce competitiveness, highlighting the importance of money and wealth. In such an environment, many migrating workers feel unsupported and alienated. The psychology becomes fragile, and so does life. LIfe is hard. You have to learn to be brave. Be aware: Life is the most valuable. Cherish it! |

![]() | Thanks Dodger, in my case I was quite drunk when I made my attempts and didn't really know what I was doing, I have since thought to myself what on earth was I doing? I have enjoyed so much happiness ( and sadness ) since, last week my niece gave birth to a baby girl making me a great uncle for the second time. |

![]() | I believe suicide is contagious. I never had such thoughts until my ex-wife tried to kill herself. It made suicide an option in my mind. Years ago I lost my job as a news broadcaster for refusing to do an elaborate story on the suicide of a prominent politician; I simply reported that the man killed himself - no more. I was fired. |

![]() | So sorry to hear this tragic news. "Dongguan is a city of fierce competitiveness, highlighting the importance of money and wealth. In such an environment, many migrating workers feel unsupported and alienated. The psychology becomes fragile, and so does life." Frank, I utterly agree with you on this piont. According to the Maslow's Hierarchy of Need, the need of recognition and belonging is very important in lives. That is to say, we all want to be recognized and accepted by people around us. We have the psychological need of belonging to a certain group or community. Living in a strange environment, many migrating workers lack the sense of belonging. Their psychology become very fragile. They became vunerable to the suicidal depression. |

![]() | This subject is closer to many people than care to admit . It is not weakness that leads them to this exit but inner pain and desperation. Many farmers, in Oz, becauce of the drought have taken their lives. Farmers that that have been held in the same family for 200 years. They had felt a huge loss of face. I cry for them all.For there, but for the support and love of my friend I could have been one. Dodger |
