I've never been to China and am just basing this question on an internet map and my mom's heritage. Would it be more adviseable to travel to Shanghai from Xiamen or see Macau/HK instead? Pro's and Con's? Thanks!

Spring Airlines (http://www.china-sss.com) is the best way IMHO to travel between Shanghai and Xiamen.

Flying Bangkok -- Xiamen by budget flight, I presume? Xiamen -- Shanghai by train takes 24h31min and costs 158-442 RMB, depending on your choice of seat/sleeper. There're no direct trains for Xiamen -- Ningbo.

You may also want to try bus between Xiamen and Ningbo. The Ningbo bus station info line is 0574-8709 1212 Good luck.

Teaching "on the way"? What do you mean? I hope you don't imagine that you could just walk into any classroom, "teach English" for 2 hours and move on with a paycheck.
