Yes, if you go to the Public Security Bureau in your city, they will give you the Visa Extension / Application Form and will help you complete the process for extensions.

As far as I know, the PSB can give you 3 months extension for 150 RMB.

Some cities have the PSB in the City Administration Service Center - this is the main Municipal Offices for both locals and visitors.

Also, you can pay a service firm to do this for you if you prefer.

Trying to 'read between the lines' I guess you do not have a job offer from a Chinese employer. Anyway, this is an overview of the system.

To get a work visa you must obtain a job offer with an employer that has a permit to employ foreigners, or that employer must have an arrangement with another business that will do it on their behalf. You must submit copies of your passport and qualifications, (the employer will tell you what is required) and two references (!!!!). If you are asked to do the 'physical' ie medical examination, just complete the self assessment part and do the rest in China.

The employer will send you some documentation which you then send off to with a visa application to the Chinese authorities overseas (normally your own country). If the paperwork is in order, you will receive a Z visa with 000 entries (on a Z visa this means single entry) valid for 30 days.

Then your employer must submit an application for a residence permit within 30 days, once granted you have the right to exit and re-enter mainland China as often as you want.
