Wow, you won a drinking competition, Alan? That is great. Well, I guess you could drink more if you are willing to have a try. Quote: Must be a masochist if wants to come here in winter. It is enough to live here, heh. If I lived somewhere else, I would stay away from here in wintertime. Well, I should say that I do not like coldness at all. But I like to see whitesnow in winter. Contradictory? Do you wear T-shirts in summer as we do?

Yep, in summertime temperature climbs up to 30 degrees celsius, but only very rarely. Normal summer temperature is about 16 - 22 degrees. Where are You from, Kevin?

Well, Carlos. You can make a guess. I have said that I hate coldness. But I like to see white snow in winter. Perhaps, this could be a useful hint.

Well WestNor... you have introduced the noble sport of beer drinking competitions. Now when I was a lad (haha) playing hockey goalie rather than soccer goalie, we used to down a few pints too - preferably after the game but at the annual festivals it was sometimes before the game as well :) Now where was I...you know, as one gets older it's amazing how a yarn can get longer in the telling with each day that passes. Ah yes, beer drinking competitions. There is a well known one called a boat race. Each team has eight drinkers like in a rowing eights event (you don't know what this is ...ok, well.... ah no, to save me the time explaining just watch at the Olympics rowing in Beijing and you will remember my tale and understand what I was saying !)...yes we had to sit on the floor in line of eight. Usually each of us had a half pint or warm flat pommie (English) beer - on the word 'go' the first member of each team drinks his ale as fast as possible and when the glass is empty places the glass upside down on his head - so if you were inclined to cheat you'd get a beer shampoo! Then the next team member did the same until the whole team had finished. The first team to drink all its beer was the winner. At the beginning of the evening it was a great way to quench a thirst, but by the end of the evening you felt a bit odd a bit like seasick..maybe that's why it was called a boat race. At university we had a race where we ran 400m then drank a beer. We did this around a circuit drinking 6 beers in all. I am ashamed to say I wasn't very good at this, I only came second. Those were the days! The days when I could down a pint (540ml if my old brain cells remember correctly) in 6 seconds, now a pint while I natter on here lasts an hour. (Sorry to those of you who might be a bit puzzled by this yarn type narrative but I attempting to expose you to an aspect of British/Australian culture in a particular form of humour that explains the nuances of our lifestyle..or at least as experienced by some old farts who can just remember when they were young!) For a small fee, usually measured in pints, I would be happy to provide a translated version of this extraordinary piece of nonsense.

Thanks, paul. I never think that you were also a beer lover and I am interested in your 'boat race' . You said you could drink a pint in 6 seconds. That was really amazing! Quote: At university we had a race where we ran 400m then drank a beer. We did this around a circuit drinking 6 beers in all. I am ashamed to say I wasn't very good at this, I only came second. Well, you were out of breath after running 400 meters very quickly. How could you down a bottle of beer? BTW, I wonder who will be the winner if you and Alan have a beer drinking competition.

Paul, I have seen the boat race being done, never taken part myself, too much of a waste of drinking time getting on the floor for me plus I would have a job getting back up, he he I don't think I would have been any good at the race either, though the 6 pints might have been worth it!! As for speed I once drank 5 pints in 3 different pubs in 15 minutes and there was a 5 minute walk between 2 of the pubs included. I hasten to add I'm a lot slower now, more like 4 pints a hour, it's a good job I only go out for 2 or 3 hours. Alan.

Alan, it is reported that Capello has become the coach of England. What do you think of this guy? Can he bring us some excitement?
Dec 14, 2007 01:20 | |
I don't know kevin but he is a very good coach, like everyone else, I'm waiting to see who his backroom staff will be. Alan

Alan, Jimmyb revealed Capello's backroom staff in the thread. They are Franco Baldini as his assistant, Italo Galbiati, goalkeeping coach Franco Tancredi and fitness coach Massimo Neri. Do you know these guys? I am not familiar with them.

Hi Kevin, Baldini is the only one I have heard of as he is his regular choice as assistant although Tancredi rings a bell somewhere in that old grey matter of mine. Alan
