GUEST2167 So many private guns! Once I get the chance to visit USA, I possibly have to be alert at all times because every one might have a gun in his arms.

Leopold, the 2nd Amendment is "the right to keep and bear arms." It was second only to an Americans right to assemble and speak out and freedom from a state imposed religion.

There is a saying "An armed person is a citizen; an unarmed person is a subject."

...and Guest2167...if you come to Montana most people have and many carry guns. You do not need to fear a person who carries a gun unless they are a criminal.

Funny thing is that criminals all over the world manage to get guns...no matter what the nation's laws are.

There was a hearing in the US Supreme Court on a Washington, D.C. law banning residents from owning handguns. Here is a link to the transcript of that hearing:

You can see that the justices clearly believe Americans DO have a right to keep and bear arms.

Pardon my saying so, but I am afraid this statement demonstrated a profound failure to grasp the meaning of freedom in the United States. The Declaration of Independence is a good place to start understanding the philosophy of the Founders. Wherever there is a disparity of power between one person and another, or between one entity and another, there will be a tendency for the stronger to impose it's will on the weaker. Therefore, in order to prevent the government from growing beyond it's intended purposes, the governed people must be armed to eliminate the disparity in power. A government isn't going to easily subdue an armed populace.

It must be understood that in order for this system to work, the people have to be responsible. If the people come to expect the government to look out for them they won't take responsibility for themselves and their family. For instance, when someone brings a gun into a school and starts shooting people, how is he able to do so without being immediately stopped? It is because his law-abiding classmates are prevented from taking responsibility for themselves by carrying a gun. School shootings are an example of how society would be if guns were illegal. The innocent would be massacred. However, if people can keep and carry guns, would-be murderers could be stopped immediately. If students and teachers at Virginia Tec or Columbine had been armed, many who are dead would yet be alive.

Well said GUEST 23816, however, I do have difficulty envisioning every student
and teacher carrying a firearm.....but, then again.......
