"he's capable of macking a come back and winning a grand slam! and i pridict that sampras will return for wilmbodom 2008! and what are you gonna do? when sampras explose on you!"

GuestTom, Sampras said in an interview after the game with Federer that he would't come back to tennis court again. If he came back, that would be really a good news for tennis fans. But I wonder if he could make any success as he has done. He is an excellent tennis player but we have to admit that he become old. For tennis, physical strength is also very important. Time for retiring!

Kevin you are quite right about Sampras.
During the 1990's he was my favourite tennis player.

As a matter of fact from the very first time I saw him play when he was just 19, I predicted that he would be one of the all-time great tennis players. It was very long before my prediction became true.

But all tennis players eventually lose their great tennis powers/abilities.

Sampras was smart because he decided to retire at the very top of his game.
This way he didn't have to embarrass himself in front of crowds as his powers declined.

This is exactly what I think, CANADAGUY. If he comes back on tennis court and makes no success, he will be the laughingstock. Just as Hingis, She chose to retire after the scandal broke out. No matter she took drugs or not, she will receive fewer critical words from the world.

GUEST33243 do not agree with Canadaguy on his statement: "I don't believe that for a moment. Federer is playing againts opponents just as tough as those that Sampras played against, but because Federer is so much better than them it looks like they are low quality players."
To compare Agasi and Nadal ? No way. Or competition Borg was facing. I will be the first in line to watch Federer against McEnroe but with wooden recket! That will be the a fun to watch. Try it yourself for a fun. Switch in a game K-Factor with a wooden recket.
Going back to Federer where will be his ego if he loose against 50 year old guy?

Why limit Federer to a wooden racket?

McEnroe played most of his career with a graphite racket.

CANADAGUY, perhaps GUEST33243 wants to prove that Federer is not as good as we thought. With a wooden racket, he might perform badly and become the laughting stock. Seriously, I am wondering if there are some tennis players use wooden rackets to play their games. I only see this scene in the cartoon Prince of Tennis.

If you think it through, it really doesn't make much sense.

When McEnroe started his career he used a wooden racket because they hadn't invented graphite rackets yet. He didn't use a wood racket because he preferred them to graphite rackets.

When graphite rackets came onto the scene McEnroe switched over to them.
He stayed with them because he preferred them over wood rackets.

When Federer started his career wood rackets were obsolete.

I have a wood racket that I have kept from my early days as a tennis player. I would be seriously handicapped if I were to play with it today against a player using a modern racket.

Times change and players change.

For the wooden rackets were obsolete when Federer started his career, Federer must be clumsy with wooden racket. Thus, it is unfair that Federer competes with McEnroe using a wooden racket because McEnroe uses the wooden racket proficiently. If they both use graphite rackets, then it is fair and I guess that Federer will beat McEnroe badly.

" I would be seriously handicapped if I were to play with it today against a player using a modern racket."

Why? Is it because you haven't used it for a long time or the wooden racket is not as powerful as graphite racket?

Yes I would agree.

It's not because I haven't used it for a long time.
Wood rackets lack the power and control that the modern rackets offer.

Many years ago I picked up my old wood racket, just for fun, and it felt like I was using a club to hit the ball. I had absolutely no control over my shots. The same thing happened when I picked up my old metal racket.
