Many foreign friends feel embarassed when they dine out at a Chinese restaurant. When the waitress ask them to order the dishes, they can not Chinese menu. This is a simple menu. Can you read it?

Dōng guā dùn pái gǔ
冬 瓜 炖 排 骨
Wax gourd stewed with pork ribs

Jiǔ cài chăo jī dàn
韭 菜 炒 鸡 蛋
Fragrant-flowered garlic fried with egg

Líng yú yóu mài cài
鲮 鱼 油 麦 菜
Canned fish fried with green leafy vegetables

Qīng chăo yě mù ěr
清 炒 野 木 耳
Stir-fried wild edible black fungus

Hēi hú jiāo niú liǔ
黑 胡 椒 牛 柳
Beef fried with black pepper

Huáng guā chăo ròu piàn
黄 瓜 炒 肉 片
Sliced meat fried with cucumber

Xiā rén chăo yóu cài
虾 仁 炒 油 菜
Shrimp meat fried with green leafy vegetables

Zhàn jiàng huáng guā duàn
沾 酱 黄 瓜 段
Cold cucumber slices with thick sauce

In most restaurants I have eaten food names have been in English, too. Many had also photos. If I would be alone in restaurant which had menu no photos, no English, I would have some problems.
No, I would have big problems, heh.

Hi BBQQ! I am very glad I stumbled on your thread. I hope you post some more because I am preparing for my next trip. When I was in Beijing, I had a hard time ordering food at the restaurants. The receptionists couldn't understand me. When they finally realized I was asking for a menu, they gave me a completely Chinese menu. Wah! No pictures! LOL I was thinking of just running my fingers on it and just point and see what I get but I decided not to.

They couldn't even understand me when I said "Coke". Turns out they call it cola in China. ^_^"

Jiǔ cài chăo jī dàn sounds good. ;-)
