Hi there,

I wanted to get a rough idea on how far my United Kingdom pounds (not euro) till go in China. Below is an approx conversion.

£10.00 = 146.078 CNY

But what can I buy with this amount? Can anyone tell me for example how much a can of coke is or a pkt of smokes or a beer? Or a meal in a resonable restaraunt

I will be backpacking on a budget and trying to work out a rough idea on how much it would cost for a day. (China Yuan). I know it's a hard one but I am sure I can get a rough idea.

Thanks for your help,

Where would you be going in China? What's your travelling pace like? That would be more helpful/crucial to your question rather than asking for the simple price of consumer items.

When I went 2 months ago I was buying bottled water for 3Y, lunch of noodles and soup would be about 5-8Y. Bus journeys in town 1-2Y. If you want better food in a restaurant expect to pay 50Y +.

Where did you get the conversion of 14.6 to the £ ? I can only get 13.6 around in the UK at the moment.

Goodness where have you been paying 3 RMB for bottled water, unless you mean the gallon bottles? I usually pay 0.8-2 RMB.

Accommodations ranges from Hostel dorms for Y50 or less depending where. Homestay in villages can be as cheap as Y10 per night.

A nice clean budget hotel can be had from Y80 to Y120 per double but no western toilet in the really cheap ones.

Buses between major towns and cities can range from Y40 to Y100 depending on the length of trip and quality of service. Trains are cheaper where available and especially good value for longer journeys.

Entrance fees can be the biggest hit on your pocket ranging from Y20 to Y100 so it is important to weigh up the value of some of these. Many are simply not worth it.

Water ranges from Y1 to Y5 depends where and how cold. Cokes and good icecream around Y5
Food is relative to what you like but good cheap food is readily available on the street.

It would be fare to say that if you are careful you can budget for between 15/20 pounds per day or even less but come prepared for the unexpected..

Enjoy your trip

I like to stay in nice budget hotels (Y120/140 and homestays (Y10/Y50 includes three meals) so I average around Y200 to Y250 per day when I'm on the road. I.e. transport but around town with no ticketed sightseeing you can manage on less than Y100

I am not nearly as frugal as the other posters. I spent 600-800 RMB a day without breaking a sweat ;-) With the exception of staying at the Tibet Hotel in Chengdu, my other accomodations were modest and in the 100-200 RMB range. Food is an outright bargain with 50 RMB providing a feast. Taxicab fares add up quickly.

Check the prices in a teahouse before you order or you could get clobbered. I had tea with a co-worker in Beijing and the check was almost 400 RMB! (Teahouse in the Beijing Airport - Domestic terminal)

you spend 600-800 RMB a day? on what? bearing in mind 600-800 yuan is an average monthly salary for a chinese person. You must be very rich.

600-800 RMB is probably "average", but the range is much wider than you think! White-collar workers in the major cities earn MUCH more than that.

GUEST72138 For example, in Guangxi, Hunan, Yunnan provinces: bottle of Coke - 2 yuan, pack of cigs - 4-5 yuan (Chinese), 9 yuan (vietnamese Marlboro). Lunch in a street - 10 yuan
