Tang Wei, the fledging Chinese actress, made her name in the controversial but hot movie "Lust, Caution" directed by Ang Lee, the famous Director. Lust, Caution is widely debated in mainland China because the movie contains over 12 minutes' erotic scene. Tang Wei, the female protagonist become the focus of controvery among critics and movie-goers. In western movies, it is quite normal for the female actress to expose their body. In China, a nation which sex and nudity( or talking about sex) is still a taboo. Tang Wei is inevitably under fierce attack. However, do you know how Tang Wei's acquaintances view her. The newsmen from China Daily interviewed Tang's acquaintances. They made some very postive comments on Tang Wei. Let's hear different voice about her:

Ang Lee, director of Lust, Caution

Every one has seen her performance. It is amazing, as if she's not acting.

It is hard to say who is helping whom in terms of me and Tang Wei, because it is her who shapes Lust, Caution.

Jiang Tao, Tang's headmaster at the Central Academy of Drama

She is good at grabbing every chance to learn new things. I never worried about her homework. When teachers had any suggestions for her homework, she would immediately revise their suggestions for the best. She is a self-disciplined girl.

She was also an active actor, always devoted to classes. Every time she acted, she tried her best.

Yuan Hong, theater agent

Ang Lee will finally find Tang Wei, and Tang Wei will also meet Lee, without me or Stan Lai (Lee's friend, a Taiwan director).

She volunteered to help me with the speeches at my theater to promote drama among the young generation. She used to train drama lovers at high school for free, even when she had a fever. She struggled for three days before asking a friend to help. The friend she recommended was great, and she told her every detail about the class.

Xiao Hong, Tang's teacher at high school

She was the class monitor, doing half of my work. She was a popular MC on campus. Her parents were busy at work, so she was very independent. She was also good at sports. Every year she would represent the class and take part in the 100 m race.

Yang Ting, Tang's friend, drama director

Tang Wei is boyish, straightforward, not fragile at all. She impressed me at our first meeting by her confident stride, white T-shirt, jeans and sneakers. With sunshine glittering on her face, she looked very beautiful.

She is very devoted to drama. When we attended a drama festival in South Korea, she hurt her feet. But she insisted on watching all the dramas during the festival, although we did not think all of them were worth seeing.

To me she is like a piece of white paper. Everyone used to be white but are now colored. I hope she will keep the innocence.

Tang Wei has become very famous after the release of the film Lust, Caution. In mainland China, about 12-minutes' erotic scene was cut before the official premiere. In USA, the movie has a rating of NC-17. This movie is critized for its profuse erotic scene. Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain is better than Lust Caution.

Lust, Caution was praised by the film critics in Taiwan, but in mainland China it is widely criticized for its abundance of nude scene. The movie was set in the Anti-Japanese War period. Several patriotic and enthusiastic university students plot to assassinate a traitor and unfortunately they fail. ' Erotic scene’ becomes the selling-point of the movie. Its theme was tarnished by the erotic scene.

"Lust, Caution" actress banned in China

HONG KONG (Hollywood Reporter) - "Lust, Caution" star Tang Wei has been banned in the Chinese media because of the sexual nature of her performance in director Ang Lee's steamy drama, according to local press reports.

An internal memo from China's State Administration of Radio Film and Television (SARFT) was reportedly sent to all television stations and print media in China on Thursday night, stating that a new television commercial starring Tang for skin care brand Pond's was to cease broadcast immediately. All print ads and feature content using the actress also were to be pulled. The memo gave no reason for the ban.

Tang's deal with Pond's is worth a reported 6 million yuan ($843,000).

Neither Tang's manager nor SARFT could be reached for comment.

In a statement dated March 7, titled "Reassertion of Censorship Guidelines," SARFT said it had informed all major film and broadcast entities and governing bodies that it was renewing prohibitions on "lewd and pornographic content" and content that "show promiscuous acts, rape, prostitution, sexual intercourse, sexual perversity, masturbation and male/female sexual organs and other private parts." However, the public notice, posted on SARFT's Web site, did not specifically mention "Lust" or Tang.

In addition, all awards shows in China were advised to exclude Tang and the producers of "Lust, Caution" from their list of guests, while discussions about the film and Tang on online forums were deleted, Hong Kong newspaper Oriental Daily reported Friday.

A spokesperson for the Asian Film Awards, where Tang was announced Friday as a presenter, said organizers had no knowledge of any ban and had not been contacted by Tang's management. The awards are set for March 17 in Hong Kong. It was not clear whether the ban would extend to awards shows in the former British colony.

The announcement comes during the annual meeting of China's highest legislative body, the National People's Congress, in Beijing. The yearly event is an occasion for a shuffling of government positions and the introduction or renewal of regulations and policies.

"Lust," Lee's artsy thriller, reportedly upset China's central government, where top officials were said to have criticized the film's content as "glorification of traitors and insulting to patriots." SARFT reportedly was singled out in the censure for permitting the film to be released in China last year, even after seven minutes of graphic sex scenes were cut from the film's theatrical release.

"Lust, Caution" is 28-year-old Tang's first major film, and both audiences and critics lauded her for holding her own, particularly given the intense nature of the sexual scenes with co-star Tony Leung Chiu-wai.

Continuation:

The banning of a film, along with its cast and crew, months after release is not uncommon in China. In early January, SARFT banned the producers of the film "Lost in Beijing" for two years and ordered the film's theatrical and home video release to be recalled. The "Lost" cinematic release had been delayed because of sexual content, which was ultimately cut from both the theatrical and home video editions.

"Lust, Caution" was controversial in China for both its political and sexually provocative content. Some Chinese tourists traveled to Hong Kong during the October 1 national holiday to watch the full version of the film. The film earned HK$48.8 million ($6.2 million), making it the highest-grossing Chinese-language film in Hong Kong in 2007.

I have seen people selling porno pirate DVD’s in almost every big city in China.

Good for the Chinese Gov, other wise poor Chinese good people will end up like San Francisco queens,
or London girl's.
Or perhaps like the hillbilly perverts from mid-America.

I watched Lust, Caution last week. The sex scene is steamier than most American R rated movies even though American film sex scenes are often more graphic. The movie is interesting and the acting is very good, but some how the movie does not live up to its hype.

I watched the movie several months ago, but the erotic scene has been deleted. Last week, I download an uncut version from Internet. It is too bold in the views of average Chinese. China's State Administration of Radio Film and Television has banned the uncut version from releasing in mainland China. Another movie Apple ( in Chinese 苹果) has also been banned from releasing for its eroctic scenes.

I know Lust, Caution was a R rated movie, but I am not sure how American film watchdog rated the movies. What are the catogories of rating? Is a R rated movie inaccessible to people under the age of 17?
