GUESTBESTGUE... Oh I've got one better, 38204, they're also pretty damn racist too. I was trying to get a job for my Philipina friend, but they shot her down because they didn't want to hire non-Americans. Being an inquisitive Canadian, I asked them why they wanted to hire me. Her answer:

"You are not American, but your pronunciation and your skin color and image is able to come to our school. You are an exception is one of the lucky ones, we are university college. More stringent requirements."

FYI, I'm part asian myself. And their "most stringent requirements" seems to translates into "Look white"

I asked for her to send me a proper address, one that I could put into google maps, and this little gem popped up

"I speak English can you understand? My address is sent to you, you write it down on the ah. Direct to the station to buy tickets, very simple, why such a copy. You find a Chinese teachers play phone, call for you. Let others translate into Chinese"

Sounds like their "English speaking staff" could use a lesson in English, or at least choose a better translation program

I'm just going to finish off this piece with one last shining example of "WTF" my entertaining conversation yeilded

HER: Well, I let the teacher put Chinese address sent to your mobile phone tomorrow, you get on the train when the driver that can. The driver will take you to school
HER: The school offers accommodation
ME: Can you send me the address over the internet?
HER: Good, I love you
ME: I beg your pardon?

WTF indeed

GUEST50106 It would be extremely helpful if someone could give me their review of working at a Web branch in Beijing (I was sent a letter of invitation from one of its branches). A timely reply would greatly assist in my decision-making process.

GUEST49117 I can only speak from my own experiences but i have had no dramas working for Web. The hours are a bit of a pain i admit but generally I have found it a good place to work.

I am coming up to the end of my third year working for them. All my documentation is in order and I have always been paid on time.

Of course you are in China! so there are always little annoying day to day hassles to be dealt with which are easily offset by a Chinese person saying "Hello" to you in the street to demonstrate their English language proficiency.

GUEST25234 Avoid this company. The school in Hefei cannot get legal visas and some of their staff have been deported recently.

GUEST21944 I just started at Web in Taicang and I am already regretting my decision. First, everything I was promised when I interviewed was immediately taken off the table. For example, I was told by the manager Abbey Web would give me a housing allowance of RMB 2000. When I arrived it mysteriously changed to RMB 1500, which isn't enough to cover a decent apartment in Taicang. Next, I was told that Web would loan me the entire initially cost for an apartment (which is typically three months up front + one month security deposit + agent's fee of 1/2 a month's rent), but when I arrived Abbey began asking me how much money I had in my account. I asked her why she needed to know. She advised me that Web would only loan me the amount IT would determine I'd need. Right before I arrived, some other poor sap started. They told him the same thing about the rent. He made the mistake of telling them how much he had. Web offered to loan him just enough to cover the lease. He asked, "how am I going to eat during this time?" They then allowed him to keep RMB 1500 to get him through the next 32 days. For my predecessor, this had a snowball effect, as they botched his visa and sent him to HK. They initially covered the airfare, and told him to bring back receipts for reimbursement. The poor guy spent every last cent he had get his visa. When he returned, not only did they refuse to reimburse him, but they charged him for the airfare. The following month, they tried to send him back to HK for his Z visa without any of the required paperwork. He asked about the paperwork and they said they would mail it to him. He advised them that he wouldn't get on the plane unless the company advanced him the costs of the trip. This was reasonable as they again claimed they'd reimburse it. The refused and told him he'd been paid RMB 4300 so he should have at least RMB 3000 left over to spend. The added that after he exhausted all of his funds they'd consider loaning him additional funds as they saw fit. The guy ultimately walked, but seeing what he went through, and the enormous financial toll it took on him, I think I'll follow him once I line something else up. This place is horrible.

GUEST89173 No matter who you work for in China, you should be prepared to leave the job immediately. I've worked as an ESL instructor for many different businesses in China, including Web for 2 years. It doesn't matter who you work for in China, they know all the rules and have all the "guanxi", and they will use them against you if they think you will let them get away with it. The only true power an expat has is his or her ability to walk off the job. The more the students like the teacher, the more painful it is for the employer to see you leave. Bottom line, keep the students happy and have a viable exit plan if the employer jerks you around too much.

GUESTJINANBOUND Hi Everyone,

I've accepted a position at the Jinan Web International School and must say I haven't had any issues with the process. I arrive in about a week to so to teach and I already have all my visa documents in and everything. The recruiter I went through was very responsive and made sure I was set with my school. The guy at my school was and is extremely real knack and helpful. Her talked nearly everyday and he updated me on where he was in the process for my visa documents.

Again, I haven't arrived yet but the process has ran so smoothly with the Jinan school. I was originally going through a foundation and had a horrible horrible experience, so Jinan school is a very refreshing experience.

GUEST81296 This was obviously NOT written by anyone who's a native speaker. Either that, or you shouldn't be teaching English ... you're illiterate!
