![]() | You are right! This is a wonderful forum. As for scholars scorning each other.... I imagine that is true if "scorn" applies to a competition between the intellects. However, I would not expect it to degenerate into bitterness and hatred in most cases. |

![]() | Hi GUESTLURKER, You got it. It is an excellent web forum. I met numerous witty, open-minded, humorous and intelligent guys. Personally, I thought it is a great “melting pot" where multi-nationals gathered here to exchange thoughts and opinions. Because of this cultural forum, I have a deeper understanding of western culture. As for the issue you are concerned, here are my two cents: IMO, real scholars don't mean to scorn or attack each other. Their common purpose is to exchange ideas and explore the fundamental truth. An open debate and discussion is to quest for knowledge, justice, nobility and the essence of life. |

![]() | There are eloquent and studious posters here??? Where???? Just kidding. ;-) Yea, same here. I like this forum, too because the posters are really giving their inputs. I know what you mean by other forums with nothing but bumps and smileys. Probably the same one where I am a lurker. As for scholars, maybe it is true that they ‘scorn’ each other. I have seen this amongst scientists and members of the academia. But it is all for good sake and they are open-minded for the sake of learning. They challenge each and everyone’s theory. In business lingo, we call it brainstorming. |

![]() | "There are eloquent and studious posters here??? Where???? Just kidding." Hehe, Shesgottobe, so we all are eloquent and studious? Are we scholars? I don't want to be called scholars. Do you know how people (especially teen girls) usually think of scholars? Many of my peers thought scholars are a bunch of "stubborn freaks with bald head". That might be biased. Nevertheless, girls generally don' t like to be called "scholars". If someone really want to call me " studious scholars", I don't mind! LOL! |

![]() | Here "scholar" as I understand, it's a commendatory term which means "a learnt person" or "a specialist in a given field". But, is it just me or anyone else here share the same feeling?... that SCHOLAR means a little bit more than that, i.e. to me, a person who deserves the title of "scholar" should be someone not only "learned" but also with high moral standards, such as being humble and modest and most importantly, ready to accept and appreciate different opinions. It's good to be confident, but to show his/her confidence by accusing or scorning others is not something to be proud of. If someone does that, I don't think he deserves the title any more. |

![]() | There are reasons for people to become cynical, there are no one born cynical, but most important reason is that they think they deserve more than they've already got, they think they are undervalued; such as they earn less than they expected, they get less attention than they want to attracted, etc etc. SO, people become cynical because the gap between what they think of themselves and what others think of them. |
