Anyone on this list from New Zealand or anyone on this list living close to me in China? I have been here a little over 2 months I am on holiday now , I know at this time of year it is probably very difficult to go places cause chinese new year will be soon. I want to go to Highnan to meet my friends there on about the 18th of Febuary. I might leave a bit before that and go to Gulin depending on costs Anyone have any idea how much it would cost to catch the train from here to Highnan and how long it will take? I will come back on feb 26th to deyang Thanks for your help Andrew |

Hi, Andrew! Frankly speaking, take train from Sichuan to Hainan is really a trek, i'll try to give you some information before you make a decision. Firstly, you need to start your journey from Chengdu, since it is the transportation hub of Southwest of China, you may conviniently take train and airplane from there. The most direct but expensive way from Chengdu to Hainan is by air, ( which city does your friends live? Haikou or Sanya? suppose it's Haikou, the capital of Hainan province ) The air ticket is RMB1530, but you may consult the local agency whether there is a discount if you book the ticket earlier. The journey will be short and comfortable, it takes only two hours.

Cool thanks for your help, I think the train will be a lot cheaper than the plane so I will take the train , do you have any idea how much that will cost? , I dont have heaps of money , maybe about 4000 RMB but plenty of time so I dont mind going by train, I think they live in Haikou Thanks for your help Andrew

Another way will be more complicated. There is no direct train from Chengdu to Haikou, so you must take train from Chengdu to Guangzhou first ( capital of Guangdong province), then transfer to another means of transportation, such as bus, train, ship, or airplane. Train K191 from Chengdu to Guangzhou starts from 19:30 to 10:05 ( the third day) which totally takes you 39 hours. The ticket is around RMB500 (for a hard sleeper). From Guangzhou to Haikou: By bus: takes 15hours, RMB178, starts at 17:00 daily By train: 12 hours, RMB138(Hard seat); RMB246--265 (Hard sleeper), starts at 22:26 daily By air: 1 hour. RMB 700, Starts at 11:00, 15:05, 15:50; 16:40; 19:40 daily By sea: 17 hours, RMB130--260, starts at 15:30 every Tue, Thu and Sat.

Andrew: I found another itinerary from Chengdu to Haikou, which may take you less time and easier to achieve than the previous one, Take Train from Chengdu to Kuming ( the capital of Yunan province) and then transfer to another train from Kunming to Haikou. The schedule of two trains are connected, I think you may save more time and money if you approve this plan. Detailed information as follow: Chongdu ---Kunming (two options) Train K113 , from13:00 to 07:10 (next day) , it takes 18 hours Train K145 , from 16:10 to11:55 (next day), it takes 19 hours Kunming --Haikou Train 8946 from 16:48 to18:25 , it takes 1hour 37minutes you just need pay the ticket once at Chengdu, and after arrival at Kunming Station, you go to the confirmation window(qianzhuan chuangkou in chinese), where you have your ticket confirmed and then you get on another train. You may have to wait in the terminal for some time up to the timetable. Do you think this way is much better than the previous one?
