Guest54109 - it all depends how you determine "skill"? I agree that workers from the countries you mentioned are no less able to do the work, but are they of the same level of knowledge (education)? China currently turns out more university graduates than any other country in the world, so it is fair to argue that China has a more skilled workforce. However, this doesn't apply to manufacturing lines where you just need thousands of people to stick things together, or poke holes in things - anyone can do that.

Why do companies invest in China?

Cheap labor? Yes.
Skilled workforce? True.
Peace and order? Sure.

But another very important reason is that China is a very, very, very, very big market that all companies cannot afford to ignore. Many companies make money by investing in China, but many are losing millions. They are here to establish a presence to ensure that they are able to tap this new market when it is ripe.

Without access to China, existing markets will not only stop growing but will shrink due to recession. What will they all tell their shareholders?
